Anna did as she was told and stepped into the room, her eyes fixed on Diane. "Is the book safe?"

"Safe as can be dear. An artefact like this is irreplacable, so I can assure you it won't be leaving my sight."
The old woman clutched the book - it was shut now, she would not be able to read anything whilst this attack was occurring. She attempted to hold items in place so that the boat would not completely fall apart. Items bashing around and bottles smashing seemed to be the worst so far.
Vin was glad Erick was swift enough to not let that folly cost him the rifle. He got the M1917 in his hands and eyed up the rising beast. The Leviathan's head swayed from side to side, and it's hungry eyes looked upon the houseboat. The thing wasn't interested in chewing wood though. The passengers maybe. Or perhaps it was the magical essence of the book which drew such a beast. Vin could say in all his years in this canalboat he had never seen anything even half the size of this beast in the waters.
"Erick, I'm going to have to steer! Otherwise the boat's going to be driftwood if it crashes"
He piloted the boat with his hands and fired off one or two shots when he had the time. One shot went astray, and the other pierced the skin of the water dragon but it didn't phase the creature.
"Scarlet's gonna kill me if this gets wrecked" he muttered under his breath.

First the turbulence rocking the boat shook him awake, then he heard the shots. Jonas pulled himself up from the seat, grabbed his weapons and hurried out to where Vin and Erick were on the deck.
"Ah shit!" He took one look at the Leviathan. Land-dwelling creatures he knew about, but water dwellers weren't things he'd often encountered. "You know how to deal with this thing?" He looked at Erick, then fired off a few shots from his own rifle at the Leviathan anyway.

"Just keep shooting it!" Erick shouted, unaware of any official and perhaps quicker way of killing the beast. Erick avoided travelling over water so he'd never actually taken on a Leviathan himself. The beast screeched and Erick had to cover his ears at the piercing sound. The beast's leg lifted out of the water and swiped the boat, snapping off part of the very end. It wasn't enough damage to make them sink but it would throw the balance off a bit. Erick focused again and shot it in the head. He hit it in the eye and the beast yelped and fell backwards with an almighty splash. The wave lifted the boat out of the water momentarily. The leviathan was quickly upright again, though looked a little wobbly as Erick continued shooting.

"Oh for Christ's..." Vin began. The splintered bow of the houseboat was a painful sight, and Diane would bollock him if they made it out of this encounter alive. He steered as best as he could to divert out of the way, but the beast consumed much of the width of the river. There was still no room to turn, and the maneuvre would be far too slow even if he could.
He took a shot at the wobbling beast, but the rifle's accuracy was awful. He reloaded and lined up the leviathan with the gun. This time it made another sharp screech, but continued to thrash about.

"Hell, works for me!" Jonas got off a couple more shots before the beast screeched and he joined Erick in covering his own ears at the horrible sound. "Christ!" He spat, then took hold of the rail as the boat shook violently once again.
He then took aim for the monster's face and started shooting again, trying to hit the eyes, having seen the effect of when Erick had shot there.

The Leviathan smacked the boat once more, thankfully mostly missing but still causing quite a bit of damaged to the tail end. After a hell of a lot more shots and after Erick, Vin and Jonas were absolutely drenched from the waves and splashes the beast was causing, the Leviathan fell. It collapsed into the water, lifeless. After a moment or two the water was still and the boat had stopped rocking. Erick dropped his rifle and put his hands on his knees, panting.
"Holy shit."

"Thank god... "
Vin's comment trailed off as he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. He had to contain his swear words but he kept on steering with a stern look on his face. The front of the boat was ruined.
"If another mythical thing attacks us, I swear... I swear... Gah... Look, one of you check on Diane and Anna."

Erick walked to the door, wanting to be out of the cold air anyway. He peeked his head inside and looked at Diane and Anna. "You two okay?" Water was dripping from his face.

Vin kept sailing the canal boat in the same direction; there was no point turning back, because they could just as easily have been followed from behind. The pain in his leg was jarring after the rocking of the boat, but he was glad that encounter was done for. The slightly broken boat narked him, and he'd have to explain that to Diane in the morning.
"I'm alright, i'm alright," she repeated "The book is too. Go get yourself a towel from the cupboard over there, dry yourself off. Attacks are one thing, don't want you catching a cold too!"
She had a warm tone to her voice to try and comfort them after the preceding events. She had the book open and kept making notes on a seperate piece of paper.

Anna noted Erick's look and shook her head. "Are you guys okay?"

"Uhh, mostly." Erick stepped inside and walked to the cupboard. "Thanks Diane." He said, grabbing a towel. He tried not to make too much of a mess as he dried his hair. "I'm afraid the boat took a beating, but we survived at least."

Jonas slid down with his back against the frame of the boat and was silent for several moments before letting out a small burst of hacking laughter. "Ha! Never want to do that again but hell if it didn't feel good watching it drop!" He wiped some of the water from his eyes. "We going to need to patch up the boat Vin?" He asked, looking over to the other man.

Diane's face dropped when she'd heard the boat was damaged, but in the circumstances it wasn't like the canal boat was going to end up pristine. She was just glad they were all okay. She hadn't known them for very long, but she felt a little maternal over the group. If they were Vin's friends, they couldn't be bad company. It was just Vin who was the sloppy one in her eyes.
She continued to scry the book.
"Yeah, but I don't see any chance we're going to fix her up anytime soon. We get her moored in the morning, she'll be okay. Just let's hope those things don't come in groups," Vin said to Jonas.

"God, I hope not!" Jonas dragged himself back up to his feet at that. "Glad we're still moving." He said, looking out over the unfriendly waters. "I'll grab you a towel and see if there's anymore of that tea knocking around." He said to Vin, then headed inside himself to get somewhat drier.
