"You have a mother in law?! Actually, I don't know why I'm surprised." Erick chuckled. Vin was a man of many mysteries, all of them hilarious.

"Ha! Never get you down will they Vin!" Jonas grinned as they moved out.
__________
"Do all of your leads point weapons at you?" Jonas chuckled dryly, letting his arms hang by his sides to make it clear he wasn't a threat to her. "That's going to make for a hell of story when you do."

Anna let a smile curl the corners of her lips at Vin's words. Somehow, she wasn't surprised.

“You’d be surprised Jonas, guns get pointed at me by leads a lot.. But yeah, this is why I was reluctant to come. Diane, can we talk?” asked Vin, holding his hands up.
“Can we talk?! The cheek Vincent! You shouldn’t have come here!” barked the old woman, rifle pointed at Vincent still. He was thinking of how best to diffuse the situation, but Diane had never been a mellow lady.
“Diane, I didn’t come here for me. This lass,” he pointed at Anna “she’s got something we need you to look at.”
“Oh, she looks just like Scarlet,” the old woman began in a soft voice now, overt aggression almost entirely gone from her tone.
“Here we go,” muttered Vin beneath his breath.
“You haven’t moved on that quick now, have you Vin!? Gone for this look-a-like hussy since you got my daughter killed!” shouted Diane, shoving the barrel of the gun right in Anna’s face now.
“Dia… I did no… Er… Look! Anna! Show her the book!” Vin responded. He’d stumbled over his words, not wanting to have this situation go south.

When the woman had spoken, calling her a hussy, Anna wanted to swing a fist. Instead she scowled, pulled her bag off her shoulder and pulled the book out of it with more force than necessary. "Here," she held it out, being certain to glare at the woman. "And for the record, I'd never go for somebody like Vin."

Diane spent half a minute eyeing up the book. She smiled at Anna behind her wrinkled eyes.
"You are a hope, my dear. Come on, all of you," she ushered as she made her way onto the canal boat "I'll make us some tea... even you Vin."
The old woman opened the door to enter the interior part of the canal boat before Vin asked her to stop.
"Anna, firstly, I respect your refusal of admitting your unrelenting attraction for me. Secondly, on a more serious note, how about you let Diane have a gander at the book - trust me, she'll know what she's looking for. Diane, we'll be inside in a sec... let me explain about Scarlet to them, just to clear up any questions they have"

Anna ground her teeth together. "Say that again and I will punch you Vin." She handed the book over to Diane and turned her glare from the old and wrinkled woman to the detective.

"You wanna get to explaining all that, Vin? How the hell is your mother-in-law gonna help?" Erick questioned in disbelief.

Anna was still a stranger in so many respects, but she and Vin bounced off one another in a friendly enough way it seemed. That was nice to have in these times. Diane grasped the book with both hands and retreated into her canal boat. She began flicking through the pages, comparing the tome with other books and pieces she had. Outside, Vin cleared his throat ready to begin the story.
“Myself and Scarlet, the owner of this boat, got married years and years before I knew any of you folks. Before I was even a detective. We were two lovebirds who couldn’t leave each other alone; Erick, you’ve probably seen me try and flirt in your place, but this marriage was a whole new level. The bills outweighed the money we had, so I began my work in the force and then eventually worked as an independent detective. Money was good. Too good.”
Vin wandered up and down a little bit, still limping.
“I did a shifty job which paid more than enough to keep me and Scarlet happy for years to come. Only the people I were spying on weren’t people, they were creatures. Creatures who were not happy with me snooping about their business. Next thing I know, I run home and Scarlet’s missing – the bed’s covered in blood and the window by it is smashed… I’ll be honest, I don’t think she’s dead. Call me stupid, but I don’t think she is.”
He rubbed his eyes. They were a little red, he looked ready to cry.
“Sure you can understand why Diane’s pissed. After that, I haven’t really spoke to her, despite her expert knowledge in certain fields concerning mythicals. And she thinks I got her daughter killed…”

"If I were 10 years younger I'd offer to find her myself, Vin." He smiled and put his hand on his shoulder. "Come on, let's get inside."

Anna softened her gaze on Vin. Suddenly she felt bad for what she'd said to him. "Sorry to hear that," she muttered, eyes down cast onto the floor.

Vin smiled at them, wiping away the lone tear which had started it's descent down his wrinkled cheek.
"Sure you can understand why it was something I'd never brought up, but circumstances meant it was necessary. Her disappearance probably keeps you in business Erick; never drank a single drop until the day she went."
He tried to make that last point sound as humorous as possible, but it was difficult when talking about such a sensitive subject. He made his way on to the canal boat and began to enter the interior. The day was almost over now as the last little bits of sunlight began to fade behind thick black clouds.

Erick laughed lightly and gave him a pat on the back before following him onto the canal boat.

Anna kept a small smile on her face as she followed the two men inside. At least it would be warmer than standing around in the snow and cold winds.

Jonas found himself completely quiet as Vin related the story of his marriage. When the other man teared up he wordlessly gave him a light clap on the shoulder and a slight smile of support; he knew all too well what is was like to lose someone you cared about. It had taken a lot of courage to tell that story, and that was something that Vin would always have over him; the courage to talk about the past like that.
Afterwards he followed the others onto the houseboat, remaining silent as he did so.
