Vin went for his bottom left pocket without halting his walk. He reached an arm behind and began to unzip. Then he heard a crunching sound as something in his back gave way. It felt like his whole body was on fire. He bit his lip, restraining from screaming obscenities to the heavens. Agonizingly, he carried on and reached for the knife. He wrapped his fingers around the handle and brought the brass knife to his side.
He had to trust Erick was right on this one. Vin had always just ignored imps, getting out of their territory pronto, but they probably had caught the scent of the book by now. He winced as his back clicked again, and his walk slowed to a limp.
Since he was showing weakness, he was sure the imps would likely strike sooner than later.

An imp pounced at Erick so he lunged forward with his knife and stabbed it in the stomach. It fell but quickly got back up and went for him again. This time he stabbed it in the heart and it fell to the floor dead.
"THE HEART!" He shouted to the others. He'd forgotten this detail, his knowledge was showing its rustiness already.

Vin plunged the knife into the Imp's heart, so he thought. The agile little bastard out maneuvred him and pulled a face instead. Another slash, no luck. Vin tried thrice more and then realized he was getting too old for fighting. The Imp swiped at his leg and ripped his suit pants.
"Why couldn't they be bigger and more stabbable!?"
He thrusted again, only to miss and slip on the snow a little. He recovered his composure. The imps were cackling at him maniacally.

Erick could see Vin struggling and wondered whether or not to help, he didn't want to hurt his ego but it looked as though his back was giving him problems. The imps were all close now and he decided Vin's life was more important than his ego. He turned and lunged at the imp in question, missing with the knife but grabbing it's arm with his left hand. "Sneaky little bugger." He held its arm firmly and stabbed it through the heart. He wiped his brow, nodded to Vin and turned to find another imp lunging forward toward him.

Since they had been going with the hope that looking as unthreatening as possible would get them past with no trouble, the rifle was slung over his back and pretty useless in close quarters anyway. So when the imps did attack he went for the knife at his belt lest the sound of his pistol notify anything else nearby of their presence.
He found the nearest imp and drove the knife through it's heart. As it fell he went for a second though this one proved to be more agile and danced around the swing, cackling madly. "Bastard little things!" He growled, going after the imp again.

Vin could thank Erick later. Whilst the numbers were beginning to dwindle, it was still not time to rest. The snow around his feet was moving; an imp was being tricksy and waiting to jump out of the white at the right time. Vin placed his shoe on the moving snow, to hear the cackling imp stop and instead begin to screech in pain. He drove the knife through the imp's belly about six times, just to make sure.

Anna drove the knife through one imps heart. A second jumped out of the snow and onto her back. She turned as it swiped claws at her neck and cheek. Her arms were up, trying to bat the thing away and it was only after she shook her head violently, grabbed a hold of a swinging arm and slammed the creature to the floor that she could put a foot onto its leg and bring the knife down in one fatal blow.

Erick was pushed onto his back by the imp. They were surprisingly strong little buggers. He rolled over so that the imp was underneath him and drove the brass knife through its heart. As he stood, he noticed that the last imp was with Jonas.

Bloody irritating little bugger was still cackling madly until Jonas faked a sweep to the left but turned it into a downwards stab at the last moment. The creature looked down at the slash across its chest and in the moment it wasn't leaping around he seized hold of it and shoved the knife through its chest. "Little bastard." He grunted, turning to the others now that the fight was over.

Vin recovered his composure as the snowy road was now littered with imp corpses. He didn't hide the fact his back had gone, as he made a limp towards the other three. They were bound to find trouble, and hopefully this would be it until they got their destination. You just never knew nowadays.
"The book... please tell me it's safe," he asked whilst panting. He tried to recover his breathing but old age had taken its toll and he felt like his lungs were burning.

Anna dropped her bag to the floor rooted through it until the leather bound item was in her hands. "It's still here. It's safe." She cast her eyes upon the man, her own scratches ignored. "Are you okay Vin?" __________________________________________
They sniffed the air. Nothing. The wind didn't the scent of The Book, which meant that they're culprits were down wind. "Hurry up," he snarled to his friend.
"You hurry up," he snarled back, stomping ahead of him. "I thought we were supposed to be having some time off."
"And this will get us recognised."
"Or killed. You know the humans have gotten better at fighting back right?"
"Are you afraid?" He sniffed. "I think I smell fear in you."
"I am not afraid of some weak humans!" His friend glared at him for several seconds before he let out a long breath. "Let's just get these humans and rip their throats out."
He grinned. "My thoughts exactly brother."

"Been better Anna. Nowhere near as bad as that time I had kidney stones, can swear that."
Vin cracked a smile but he was wincing a little. He turned on his heel to walk, but could manage a limp at best. They had cut deep into his leg when they had scratched him. His tendon was almost torn and he gritted his teeth. Shuffling through the snow, he adamantly kept moving forward.
"We'll be there soon. Let's keep hushed and be thankful we made it out alive with that book."

Erick worried about Vin, he hadn't realised quite how unfit he had gotten. He wiped his knife on his trousers as he walked and returned it to his bag, hoping they wouldn't need to use it again.

Jonas wiped the knife off and slid it back into his belt. Goddamn book was really proving to be a thorn in everyone's side after less than a full day. It had better have something definitely worthwhile inside it, not some false hope and hearsay.
"You need a hand there Vin?" He said gruffly. "Got some bandages on me if you want patching up?"

"Yeah I need a hand Jonas, keep a watch whilst I piss in this bush. Bursting since we left the pub."
Vin didn't let the injuries ruin his day. He just had to move slower, limp for now, and then after this whole escapade he could relax with a nice bit of whiskey. They continued through the snow.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The snow had stopped entirely by the time they had reached the Irwell. It was right at the border of Manchester and Salford, but those places had been a little less friendly in more recent times. The mythicals had taken both places for their own, and only little pockets of human life were still in tact.
They trudged through the white muddy sludge which had been fresh snow at some point. Vin spotted the boat he was after, a canal barge painted a dirty red. In big fancy letters were the words "Scarlet's Pride". Vin eyed the canal boat which seemed empty.
"You've got a hell of a lot of nerve showing up here Vincent Mallory!"
Behind the group was a woman in her mid-sixties. She was dressed in a winter coat with a scarf tightly wrapped around her wrinkled face. In her hands was a M1917 Enfield Rifle pointed at the limping detective.
"Guys," Vin began "no sudden moves... This is our lead. And, eh, also my mother in law. Can explain that one at some point."
