Vin was alone with his thoughts, and summed up what the group was undertaking. It wasn’t something he wanted to do, but these events… well, they had been a bolt from the blue. And besides, there was a danger here that could come to haunt him if they did not act. Whoever had sent the wolves would have more under their wing. To make steps towards solving whatever was so special about the book would lead to sanctuary. Maybe even solving everything. Nah, that was wishful thinking.
He turned the corner towards the pub, and caught a glimpse of Anna. He called her name as he closed the distance.

Her name being called attracted her attention to its direction. Vin was approaching and Anna plastered a tiny smile across her face. "Vin, hi. I'm just waiting for Erick to open up. You seen Jonas yet?"

Vin shrugged in response. He gave a look to the skies - little less dark then they were before, the snowfall was relatively light in comparison to what it had been. Still, he didn't feel great.
He wrapped his thick black coat around himself tightly and knocked on the door.
"Hurry up Erick, it's not warm standing out here waiting for your ass!"

Erick opened up the door, "Get in quick!" he beckoned, ushering them inside and quickly closing and bolting the door behind them. "Sorry, had to be sure it was you, there have been a lot of wanderers out this morning, like they're watching the place. We have to move soon."

"Bollocks and hellfire!" Jonas crashed out of bed and glared at the alarm clock that should have gone off fifteen minutes ago. "When I see that no good son of a bitch who sold me those batteries!" With a growl, he gave the offending clock a little percussive maintenance and it spluttered back into life. He didn't bother resetting it now. His watch still worked for the time being.
One wolfed-down breakfast later, he grabbed his guns, his gear and his coat and thundered out of his house, still soured by the failure of the alarm clock. Whoever said that life was too short for petty grievances could fuck off. Petty grievances were one of the last things he had left.
A short time later he was knocking on Erick's door, gloved hand smacking against the wood: "Erick it's me, and it just started snowing again!"

Vin still had uncertainties on taking the group on this task to this contact. He would receive an earful for doing this. That was minimum. Still, he pushed his doubts to the back of his mind and was adamant that this was the right thing to do. His stomach was in knots, but they were all in danger by this point.
“You think there’s folks watching? I don’t think it’s going to be wise to stay here then Erick. We’re at square one until we figure out this book for what it is, and I don’t want to die in this place. I spent enough time in here for one lifetime, don’t want my corpse dirtying up your bar pal.”
On cue, Jonas’ voice came from outside with some knocks. Vin pulled his clothes tighter together to keep himself warm.
“Right, we’re going now, straight to the Irwell. I don’t want to hear a peep from anyone about our destination, in case one of those creatures catches wind and gets there before us.”
He checked his waist, and surely enough he had a trusty revolver stashed away. A silver knife accompanied it, but that was situational at best. Vin’s knife-fighting skills weren’t exactly prime, he could barely butter toast most mornings.

Anna had followed Vin into the bar and nodded to his words. She couldn't argue with him. In all honesty she just wished she could go back a few days and ignore the dying man. The book could've been somebody else's trouble and she would've been a lot better off.
Her eyes moved throughout the group, trying to get a sense of what everybody's thoughts were but she couldn't even begin to guess. With a sigh she checked her belongings, a pistol hidden beneath her coat and a knife in her boot. There was a second pistol on her other side and she nodded, waiting for them to move out.

Erick nodded and picked up four backpacks. He handed one each to Vin and Anna. "They're all the same, they gotta bit of everything for killing about anything. Not much of each though, I don't know what we're gonna face." He opened the door and passed one to Jonas. "No time, we're leaving now. Don't lose that pack." He ushered the others out, put his own pack on his back and locked the door to the pub.

"Where we headed?" Jonas grunted, taking the pack and sliding it over his shoulders. Then he checked his weapons: Rifle, Pistol, Knife. Standard hunting gear if you were lucky enough to own it. He took hold of the rifle as he joined the other four. "Guessin' we've got ourselves a lead."

"We're heading somewhere Jonas, all you need to know. Eyes sharp, follow me, and don't ask questions on the road," said Vin. He slung the backpack on, and felt a crick in his back. He wasn't as young as he used to be. Maybe after all this would blow over he would consider working at a desk instead. He could even work at Erick's pub to pay off his debts.
-------------------------------------
The first twenty-five minutes of their walk was quiet, if not silent. There was wind and the sound of snow crunching underfoot. Vin was sniffling as he felt a cold coming on. He halted, raising a hand to cup his ear and began to listen to his left.
"Shit. That's laughter. I'd bet Imps. Or Kappa, depending how close we are to that river. Just keep a vigil folks - we'll continue on the road and if we look like we're not gonna attack them, they might just piss off on their own accord."

"Ha! My kind of road trip." Jonas grinned, though he knew he probably shouldn't have. He did have a knack for finding all the wrong kinds of trouble after all.
___________
"Well, here's hoping." He grunted, slowing up as Vin stopped up ahead. "We can't keep stopping every half our for a firefight. Aside from the obvious crawl we'd have to move at, we don't have the ammo or the numbers for that sort of shit." His upper lip curled ever so slightly. "Even if 99% of these buggers do heartily beg to be kicked down a peg. Or ten."

Anna stared at Jonas, "So let's just skirt around them. If we even tried anything then we'd be dead anyway. That's the rule these days. It's them not us." She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. The air was cold and just standing around was making her even colder. "We should keep moving," she muttered to Vin.

“Agreed,” he replied, before carrying on his walk hoping the others would follow in tow.
They’d only managed another hundred yards or so before the cackling was coming from behind them. The creatures weren’t Kappa, Kappa didn’t venture this far from water. Vin reached the conclusion they had to be imps or something similar. He gritted his teeth, but continued walking at the same pace. As long as he or the others didn’t pull the first move, the imps might go away on their own accord. They were tricksy, not necessarily outright malevolent. Whilst he longed to just reach for his revolver and plant a shot between their eyes, it would not only aggravate the creatures but it would also alert other nearby beings.

Erick stayed silent when they were stopped by Vin and listened. Laughter, like a cackle. Then they moved. 'Imps; gotta be' he thought. "Bottom left pocket" he shouted under his breath to everyone as he unzipped his own. He pulled out a small knife made of pure brass and showed it to them before readying himself to stab one in its inevitable attack. He hoped there weren't too many and he hoped his knowledge of different creatures hadn't become rusty.

Clean fresh water in the winter lands. White snow able to mask their skin. The imps tittered as they pranced around, danced and played games. The winter snow made their games more fun. One imp crawled beneath the surface, leaving a raised trail behind it until it jumped, wrapped its hands around imps face and tackled it to the ground with cackling laughter.
The biggest imp sat watching, like a sentry, alert and cautious. The others could frolic all they liked as long as they left him alone. He turned, eyes to the surroundings. He sniffed. There. Humans. He sniffed again. Four of them. His mouth curled into a large toothy grin. It called to the others for silence and relayed the news. "Humans. Fresh. Four of them. That way." and he nodded in that direction.
Laughter erupted and they pounded the snow covered ground. With every step the group of imps took there came a cackle and they moved. The big one called out again. Some of them jumped forward, rushing towards the humans whilst some of them went underneath the snow. With luck it would take a matter of minutes. ___________________________________________________________________
Anna frowned and listened. She didn't like imps. They were pack creatures that jumped helpless humans and ate them within minutes. She followed Erick's instructions and grabbed the brass knife. The last thing they would need is more creatures on their tail because of gun shot noises.
