'Fun bloody times' Jonas thought as he followed after the others down to the basement. Their once quiet little town was rapidly livening up, and not in the good way either. Wolves turning up like that did not bode well, nor did that book the girl carried. He hoped Vin could make some sense of it under better conditions.
"And this day started off well." he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

Anna followed Vin down the stairs. She eyed Jonas behind her with caution. 'Great,' she thought. 'No doubt they'll carry on blaming me.' Part of her wished she could just leave. She just wanted to escape to some remote part of the world with nothing but a beer and some food. Left alone to do whatever she pleased.
She sighed internally and eyed up the room with one brow cocked. It wasn't much but it was enough.

Erick bolted the front and back door shut and checked outside the windows before making his way down to the basement and closing the door behind him. He was quiet for a moment as he walked around the room to the table and sat down. "All of you pull up a chair, let's find out what it is we're dealing with here." He spoke, definitively.

Vin's somber expression didn't change, apart from when he grated his teeth in reaction to the sound of his chair screeching against the floor as he dragged it to the table. It was a horrible sound, chilling the man to the core, but it was just a sloppy mistake in his actions. He sat on the wooden chair, it was laden with cobwebs and dust but was surprisingly comfortable.
"Anna, I want you to tell us - with all the details - what exactly occurred? Start just before you got this book, and round it up just before you got here. Any and every piece of evidence could help us piecing together what we need to."
Vin had that look on his face, like gears were working and his brain was full steam ahead. He tried to look relaxed, but it wasn't an easy endeavour. He crossed his arms over one another, leaned back on his chair and waited.

Anna pulled a chair up to the table and sat with a nod. "Okay. I was travelling on foot across the land." She waved a hand in the vague direction of the door. "It was cold and the wind had picked up." Images replayed themselves within her mind as she went. "I was maybe twenty miles from this place when I tripped over something. In the thick snow with the heavy winds it had been hard to see anything on the floor. You could imagine my surprise when I turned to see a body."
Her eyes flitted around the room. All eyes were focused on her. Her gaze shifted to the table as she continued. "I asked what had happened, if he needed any help. He told me that a group of Imps had attacked him. Then he pulled this book," the black leather bound pages were tossed on to the table top. "From his pocket, pushed it into my hands and said, "Do not lose it. Please, keep it close." I was about to tell him that I would help into the nearest town when he.. well he passed. I checked for a pulse, checked again, and a third time before I decided there was nothing I could do for him. I pulled his jacket over his face and carried on through the snow."
She sighed and licked her lips. Talking this much was making her mouth dry. "The winds calmed down fifteen minutes later and I saw not much of anything until I found this place. No creature or human being until now." Anna eyed the group before her and shrugged her shoulders. "That's it. I swear."

"What did he look like? Was he human?" Erick wanted to make sure they had all of the details. Maybe he'd stolen the book and the Imp wanted it back...but if so why did he still have the book and why did the Imp attack him? His mind was racing. What the hell was this book?

She nodded. "Very human. Erm," trying to pull an image of the man from out of the snow was proving difficult. "Not much older than Jonas," she nodded to the man. "Dark hair and light eyes." She shook her head. "That's all I know. Whatever that is," she nodded to the book now. "It's something that's interesting and worth a look."

Jonas followed them all down to the cellar, then planted himself on a chair next to Vin's, facing Anna as she started to recount the tale of how she had come across the book. He listened in silence, his thoughts forming on the matter as the girl spoke to them, telling the whole story since acquiring that damned tome, to ending up here, tailed by the Werewolves.
"Huh; if he's from around the area, or one of the other towns nearby, I might have seen him a couple of times when I ranged out for the hunts, but that's a big maybe. He don't ring no bells." Jonas grunted when Anna mentioned the man's appearance: "Whoever he was, he sure had a nose for trouble, carrying that thing." he gestured at the book: "You get anything much from it Vin?" he turned to the man beside him.

“You say this fella had his hide tanned by some imps? Well, in numbers they can be more than pests. And not to steal this book? Unless, he died defending it – or something scared the imps away. They’re tricksy bastards, why they wouldn’t nab his precious book is… well, it’s not normal.”
By this point, Vin had stood up from the table. He was pacing, that detective’s pace he’d had since he first started out over twenty-five years ago. Uhming and ahhing, his mind ran circles around possible theories. He’d almost begin asking something, before hushing himself and stroking his thin moustache. It was a story almost clear, like a jigsaw just shy off completion. He had more questions, more inquiries, more logic he wanted to implement into this story to try and figure it out. Anna’s story sounded right.
“I don’t think that imp attack was normal. Something happened. An interruption. But then it couldn’t be them wolves – they would’ve killed you outright in the middle of nowhere, their job would be done. There’s something about that book. It’s important in ways I’m not understanding. There’s people I’ve met through my career who would be better at understanding but… “
Vin wandered back to his seat. He slumped down and buried his head in his hands.
“But it’s just, this kind of risk, I can’t put them under that. It’s bad enough what’s happened tonight, and god bless you Erick for being ready against those hounds or we’d be dead”

"If this book is so important then something tells me no one knows the guy had it, and certainly don't know Anna has it now. We just gotta know who it's important to. If this book could make our lives a little easier in this hell hole then I'd say it's worth troubling people for. But I don't want any more trouble over nothin'." Erick spoke to no one in particular. A small pack of wolves in his bar isn't anything compared to what walks the streets at night.

"Vin," Anna started. She kept her voice low and tried to entice calm and almost pleading into her tone. "Would we be able to get in contact with some of your friends? I know the risk is high, but, we need to know what's in this book. I haven't been able to make much headway and I just want to know what it's worth. Please?"

"That is an ask bigger than any other, but you're a troubled lass"
Vin mulled it over, stroking his moustache and scratching his chin in thought. Then after a minute of silence, he nodded.
"Fine. Now, we're gonna have to make our way towards Manchester. The Irwell, we're heading there, and there's a canal boat by a certain name that we need to find. Don't worry, they're not some bilge rat, they're more reliable than the three of you put together. My contact might be there, might not be, this isn't someone i'm in as much contact with as I should be... "
Vin looked towards the wooden door they had entered the basement from. He looked longingly, straightening out part of his creased suit.
"We're heading out as soon as, perhaps tomorrow if that suits all of you. The longer we linger, the more likely i'm gonna change my mind on this."

"Thank you," Anna said with a smile. "Thank you Vin." She eyed the other patrons to see what they were thinking and going to say.

"We can meet here; I'll keep it closed up. There's plenty o' weapons we can take." Erick replied without looking at anyone. He didn't know what he thought of the idea, but he wasn't going to let them go without his backup.
"We'll meet here first thing, knock three single taps on the door so I know it's one o' you and as soon as we're ready we'll head."
---------------------
The next morning came round too quickly in Erick's mind. He hadn't slept well, understandably. He was dressed and packed by the time the sun had finished rising and he sat behind his bar waiting for a knock.

Anna couldn't help but to pass a hesitant look over her shoulder. She couldn't shake the chills that danced down her spine, as though somebody were watching her. She took a single breath to steady herself, raised her first and knocked three times.
