"I would have thought a Nancy Drew like you would already have checked the phone book for that sort of thing." James laughed though inside he wondered what Emily really knew and what she was letting on. He also wondered how much she would hate him for concealing the truth from her.

"Mmm, oh yeah!" said Emily, brain ticking over as she thought about James had said. Her wits were sharp, she knew he was dodging all of her questions, but her memory was where she failed. Frowning, she stared pointedly at her ice-cream and as she sighed to herself, her eyes flickered from their normal oceanic colour to brown as she mused over her next move, her memory of the article slowly falling from her like cupped water from her hands.
Emily very rarely noticed if she ever underwent a change like she just had, although she knew it happened. It was a subconscious thing, at the moment, and she only had a vague understanding of it.

James smiled as he watched Emily's eyes. She may remind him of her mother occassionally but that little trait of changing was from her father.
"Emily, I know you're curious, but it really is best if you let the past rest." James said his voice seriuos. "You need to trust me on this. Its for your own safety."

Emily nodded, sighing quite audibly and in an over-the-top manner. "Yes Uncle James. I know." She took another mouthful of her ice-cream, now depressed. She'd come close to a heart attack and all over what seemed like some sort of rather horrible coincidence.
This all meant more to Emily than she was letting on. Sure, she was curious, wouldn't anyone be? But there was more to it. Emily had always known she was adopted. It had never stopped her calling Francine and Edward by the affectionate parental terms she did, but it left a hole in her, a hole in her identity. And Emily was sure it was growing.

James sighed. He hated keeping stuff from his Emily. It was clear she had been hoping James would finally give her the information she wanted.
"Emily, I just don't want anyone to hurt you. You mean the world to me." James was about to go on when he heard a familiar squeal.
"UNCLE JAMES!" At first James did nothing, but he couldn't ignore it when a little girl with bright red hair ran over and hugged him. Behind her, smiling was a girl about 11. Her hair was as dark as midnight and her eyes sparkled.

Emily creased her brow at the little girl, and the girl following her. Both seemed younger than her, and her heart started pounding again. This time, she wasn't scared, though. Or at least, she hoped not. Just confused. And mildly upset in a obviously selfish way. A variety of questions ran through too fast for her to reasonably attempt an answer at, and she was left with one quite simple statement in her head...
"But that's MY Uncle James!" she muttered to herself, looking rather glum and being incredibly quiet, talking to her ice cream rather than anyone else. Taking another bite of her ice cream, and then putting her spoon down rather loudly, feeling betrayed, Emily stood up.
"Thanks for the ice-cream, James." she said, leaving it half finished and pointedly missing off the "Uncle" that she so fondly prefixxed his name with normally as she left at a rather rapid pace. It was all a bit much for her.

James let a wide of range of curses go through his mind at that moment as he dislodge the young girl from him. He was about to follow Emily but the dark haired girl had been faster and now the red head had no one to look after her.
The dark haired girl ran to catch Emily. She reached out and grabbed the older girl's wrist.
"Wait, please. You're Emily Prince right?" the dark haired girl asked.

Emily turned, even more startled than she already was. "Who are you? How do you know my name?" she said, snatching her wrist from the girl's grip.

"I'm Link Star-Anise. James is a friend of my mother. Thats why my sister called him that." Link said matter of factly. She was the one who thought with her head unlike her sister. "The way James used to talk about you with my mother I thought you were his daughter. But then I heard your last name and my mother getting mad at him."

"Then you..." Emily trailed off and looked at Link, intrigued. She had a feeling she'd learn more from this girl than she would from James, for sure. "Why was she getting mad at him?"

"She said he was getting to attached to you. That he would only end up getting hurt in the end." Link said very straight forward. "But I don't..."
"Link Star-Anise, how dare you run out the door and leave your sister alone?" James appeared behind Link, but Link barely batted an eye. The red headed 8 year old clung to his hand and swung it back and forth. "And Emily Prince I expected better manners from you."
"But Uncle James, Emily was jealous. She didn't know about Ki or me. She was upset. I could see it in her eyes." Link said thining she was defending Emily. James frowned.
"And what have you two been talking about?" he asked suspiciously knowing very well that mixing the two girls might cause problems. Thats why they had agreed to keep the girls apart. That and for Emily's safety.
"That your a friend of mom's and that you love Emily very much and she shouldn't worry." James shook his head. Kids shouldn't talk like this. It was Ian coming through in her he always believed in truth and telling it as it was.

Emily's brain was ticking over, very slowly. It was all moving too fast for her to take in, and yet again her heart was thundering in her chest as she tried rather desperately to remember what on earth had set off the spark in her brain.
"I'm sorry Uncle James," said Emily, quite softly, still too perplexed by her own short term memory, especially regarding names and places.

"Its fine" James needed to think. Ki started to pull on James sleve and he loed down at her.
"Daddy's said we could go to the park after ice cream, Come with us." Ki said smiling. "The pretty girl will come too."
"You have to ask Ki. And say please." Link corrected her. Ki screwed up her face and tried to find the words.
"Uncle James, can you and the pretty girl come, pleese?" Ki asked slowly.

Emily smiled in spite of herself. "Come on, Uncle James. Mama doesn't expect me home until after Papa, I swear," she smiled, almost convincingly. Honestly, Emily needed to continue speaking to Link. She needed to. She needed to hear the rest of the story and find out as much as possible. It was necessary.

But James didn't pay attention to Ki or Emily, he looked straight at Link.
"Is your father picking you up there?" James asked her. He really didn't want Emily anywhere near Logan, despite everything he stil didn't trust the man. Plus he hadn't been on good terms with Emily's father.
"Not for awhile." Link said. "He was taking Ian to the doctor's. He has a cold."
"For a little while then. You girls shouldn't be out alone anyway." James said. Ki jumpped up and down while cheering. Then with her free hand she took Emily's and started to drag them towards the park.
"Ki this is Emily. Emily that girl dragging you down the street is my sister Kiara." Link laughed as she walked behind.
