Fuck.
That was the only word racing through Naomi’s mind. Of course, typically, on the day she let the doctor go. Of course there would be a pregnant woman and a disabled child. She was internally screaming at herself, kicking herself, but had to maintain a welcoming friendly expression. She could bet that Lee or the others had told the survivors about Doc Ryans too, and now their hopes would be dashed. That’s when Naomi spotted there was only one of the students, not all three. That didn’t bode well, but she would pull Lee aside and speak to him about that after this.
“Nice to meet you Charlie!” Naomi said all too enthusiastically, trying to push her earlier mistake to the back of her mind “I’m sure you’ll like it here. The Stone family have four kids with ‘em, so I’m sure you’ll make friends. And the Hammad twins love meeting new people!”
She felt like she was advertising the camp too much to the child. Both her selling points were true, except that the Stone family were incredibly inclusive in their activities and probably wouldn’t want their children making friends. Weirdos. She now looked at Heather, and the guilt rose anew. She tried to maintain face.
“Hi Heather; sure you and Charlie are tired from wherever you came from, I’ll make sure there’s a tent free for you both. We’re just like you, trying to make it in what has become of the world.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
George caught sight of Henry. The dog did take a liking to that man, at least she’d have a new person to look after her. The poor Labrador was whimpering again, tail between her legs once more. He couldn’t see Brian at the moment, but he presumed he was in one of the side rooms getting supplies still.
“Look, I only came t-to give you this backpa-”
The coughing fit he had earlier returned with a vengeance. He fell onto his hands and knees and felt like he was hacking up his lungs. His bitten arm gave way and he collapsed onto the floor momentarily. The flickering light overhead gave enough light for Henry to see he was covered in his own blood. The bitemark was visible too. There was no point George hiding it. His coughing subsided and he managed to get back to his feet.
“You need to take t-t-this. Backpack, bat… Poppy. I’m not c-c-coming back to Little Hadham. One got m-me.”
George was shaking and shivering now. He wiggled the backpack off onto the floor, placing the cricket bat next to it. He put his forearm in full view of Henry.

Charlie grinned and clapped when he heard about the other children, he'd not seen his school friends in ages so he was glad to make new ones. Heather smiled and nodded. "That would be great, thank you. I could really do with some rest right now."
"Will there be room for daddy and Howard in our tent too?" Charlie asked the lady.

Naomi noticed that the boy did not indicate anyone in the group was "daddy" or "Howard". Heather didn't seem to be particularly close to any of these survivors either in a way that indicated any of them were her partner. It would have been a bigger faux pas to presume someone here was her partner rather than not identify them.
"Barry," she said to the soldier "go sort a tent for Heather and Charlie. And of course there'll be room for them Charlie."
She did not want to pry into questions about Heather's partner or this Howard or anything else. The mother needed rest. Naomi instead turned to the rest of the Sawbridgeworth survivors, awaiting their introductions. Barry began to lead the way for the mother and child. His mind was wondering how the pair had made it this far, but it was incredible what folk were capable of doing since the outbreak.

"Thank you." Heather said as she followed Barry with Charlie. They'd close their eyes for a few hours and worry about the doctor and the other children tomorrow.

When George had showed him his arm the blood from Henry's face had drained itself. He stared at the bite mark, his heart racing along with his mind, trying to think up what they could do. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to say. He turned his eyes to the floor and back up to face the pale faced, blood soaked student beofre him.
So young. He had had a life ahead of him if the apocalypse hadn't arrived. Henry ground his teeth together, tightened the muscles in his jaw and nodded. "I'm sorry," he managed, reaching down to grab the bag and bat.

Brian moved back into the corridor, he was covered in blood but none was his own. It was then he saw George covered in blood.
"Aww shit." He looked at the student for a few moments.
"Typical that no one gets a break in this god damned Apocalypse isn't it." He took a few moments and moved closer to the others.
"Look George I know your gunna be scared and I know this is sudden... I can end this for you if you want. I'm giving you the choice. You can turn or I can end it before it starts and at least you can die knowing you never hurt anyone." He felt awful for suggesting it but it didn't take long for someone to turn. Considering how long they'd been apart he might only have a few minutes left or a few hours but there was no way of knowing.
"Before we do anything though we need to know how to get to this camp you were taking us to." Once again he felt awful but he'd seen his fare share of horror and sometimes if you wanted to survive you had to be pretty evil to get by. _______________________________________________________
Greg looked around the camp as they came in and it had appeared pretty secure from what he could tell.
"Hi Naomi my names Greg." He didn't really have anything else to add right now he would just see how things went he guessed.

“Nice to meet you Greg. Make your way into camp, someone will make sure there’s a tent for you.”
She received introductions from the other four survivors who had accompanied Lee, Heather, Charlie and Greg. Marcus and Harold were a pair of old men who had been hiding inside the church almost since the dawn of the outbreak, with the latter of them being a common churchgoer who only had a bible on him now. Hugh was in his mid-twenties; a pockmarked man with a limp, he apparently was speed-dating when the outbreak occurred. He hadn’t changed from his smartest shirt since, just in case he met his dream girl out in the wastes. He was incredibly sweet natured and shy. The last of them was a woman in her early thirties, but it took all of five minutes to coax the girl to speak even her name. It was Niamh, and she looked on the verge of tears at all times. Naomi would have to keep an eye on her.
The survivors in the camp acted warmly enough to the newcomers. The Stone family as always kept to themselves, and the children were told off from their father for being too nosy. Barbara O’Connell and her remaining son, Dylan, wanted to get to know the survivors straight away, even the tired mother and her kid. Madame Archambault said something in French before returning to her tent – she seemed pretty ambivalent. The two soldiers were happy to see new survivors, but remained on their duty of watching the perimeter. Simon and the two Hammad girls were absent, but Naomi presumed they were probably doing odd jobs such as fetching firewood or food. Naomi walked past Doc Ryans empty tent, and the pangs of guilt returned sharply.
“And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually”
Lee was back to singing so it seemed. His eyes were in the distance, but he had a look of boredom about him predominantly. His hands were in his pockets and he kicked about tufts of grass. Naomi walked over to him just as he was beginning the next verse.
“Cut the crap songbird. Now, can you tell me what’s actually happened?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Brian, I don’t want you to do that. You don’t have to do that. I’d rather… I’d rather you lock me in one of these rooms. Write a warning on the door, I don’t know, that way I can’t hurt anyone. Just, I don’t want to die with a swift blow to the head. I don’t want to die. Since I have to, I’d rather just go quietly, on my own.”
Tears were fully coming down his face now. His eyes were read, his cheeks were flushed, and his sobbing only increased. George fell to the floor, wrapping both arms around the dog. She licked some of the tears off his face. After thirty or so seconds of being hysterically upset, George managed to reduce his weeping to a sniffle. Conveniently there was a map of the surrounding area on a wall, but it cut off way before Little Hadham.
“Follow this h-h-here road. At the roundabout, to your left will be a s-s-s-s-sign saying Little H-Hadham. Go that way, and in one of the f-f-f-fields.”
Between the shivering and sobbing and the coughing it was hard to get the sentence out. He looked into one of the rooms they had looted already – it had a lone hospital bed in there. He thought that as good a room as any to die in.
“Please. L-l-lock me in there. A.. And c-can you look after P-P-Poppy?”
He bent down the Labrador now, scruffing her neck and tickling her under the chin.
“G-gonna m-m-miss you girl.”

Henry closed his eyes as George said his goodbye's to Poppy. He'd forgotten what it was like to lose somebody and he nodded at George's request to be locked away. "There's a lock on the inside so I doubt you'd be able to turn it as a zombie." He stopped talking, hating how he was referring to the man as a zombie already.
He sighed and pulled the bag over his shoulder and the bat into his other hands. "We'll get there. I promise to take care of Poppy for you."

"T-t-that'd mean the wo-"
His coughing got more intense, and he felt himself ready to buckle over. Maintaining his balance, he started to move into the room.
"You b-b-be good girl."
The dog gave him a puzzled look and a slight whine, but she stayed close by Henry's side rather than following George into the room. The big eyes of the labrador looked sad and lonesome, and George felt like he was going to crumble into weeping once more.
"Fellas, I... I didn't know y-y-you l-long. You w-wi-will fit r-right in at camp. I w-wish them all w-well."
He grabbed the lock on the inside and began closing the door. He couldn't do it though. He cried hysterically once more.

"Don't worry George. We'll tell everyone at camp what a hero you are. Not many people would have ventured this far in a time like this just to help people. And I promise, if we find any way to save you we'll come right back here and fix you." Brian didn't know what else to say, he'd made a point of not getting attached to people for months because this is how everything ended with someone dying or becoming one of the infected. He turned to Henry.
"It ain't right."

Henry turned to Brian and nodded. In a whisper he spoke, "No, but it's what he wants." He shuffled the bag onto his shoulder a little more. He turned his eyes back to George and sighed. The man wouldn't be able to close the door with the state he was in. They needed a way to block it off from the outside. "We need a way to trap him inside," he said, again, in a whisper.

Brian moved to the side and pulled over a few of the hospital trolleys. He looked up at Henry, his facial expression was one of misery and hatred of what they were doing.
"Look George... I know this is gunna sound like a dick move but we've gotta get out of here soon, this place lighting up will attract more zombies soon enough and like you guys said we need to get to camp before dark. Were gunna jam these things out side the door but you gotta shut yourself in now."

Between sobbing and coughing he made out what the two out in the corridor were saying. He wiped his face clear of tears and grabbed on to the lock as firmly as he could. He eyed the room once more, and it was all just empty cabinets and lone hospital bed. A peaceful place to die.
“G-go-goodb-bye… ”
He slammed the door, locked it and began to wail and cry. He clutched himself, held himself in a ball in the corner of the room, but the screams he was emitting would not slow down. It was a torrent of tears crashing down on to the floor. He felt like his arm was on fire, he felt like the whole room was collapsing in on him, he felt like such a fool. Outside he could hear the dog’s sad whimpering, even hear her scratching at the door a little bit. It just made his heart hurt that little more. The boy was sensible, cautious, collective right until this point. He felt like his whole world had crumbled in a moment.
Only when he calmed down did he manage to pull himself to the bed. He was feeling weaker and weaker, like it was the most intense fever of his life. The arm throbbed and flared with pain. He lay on the bed on his back now, trying to hold back the tears which would not stop coming up. Trying to stop the coughing. Trying to die in a peaceful manner.
He crossed his hands into one another. Tried to search back to those memories in scouting. The amount of times he had to go to church, or mutter Christian prayer just because somebody else said so.
“Our F-father who art in h-h-heaven. Hallowed b-be thy n-na-name…”
He trailed off and soon he was too weak to even pray or stay awake. George fell into a sleep eternal, one in which he would awake no longer human.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Lee had just finished explaining all of what had happened to Naomi, including that he had no clue where Beth was. Naomi liked that George and some others would bring medical supplies, but with no doctor then it wasn’t as useful as it could be.
The day as a whole wasn’t good. They had found survivors, but they weren’t exactly the most predisposed for work around the camp. Heather being pregnant didn’t bode well due to the lack of doctor. Charlie being disabled meant that he couldn’t quickly escape if the worst was to happen. Greg and some of the others seemed alright. Niamh seemed nervous and scared.
She thought about the other survivors who came early, Theo and his men. They looked rough, and she had basically traded two of her own people away on the basis of good word and some decent supplies. It wasn’t something she was proud of.
And now there was Beth still absent. And she could only hope George and whoever he was with would come back in one piece, especially with some supplies.
She left Lee to his singing and found Simon who had returned at last. She wept into his shoulder for a while. It was hard. Even the minorest of decisions felt difficult nowadays. She just wanted to pass the reins to somebody else at times. There was everything to consider – who got what food, who was on watch for the day, whose tent was where, who said what to who? All her life experiences could not have prepared her for life nowadays. But she had to endure. All survivors had to endure.

Brain moved the two trolleys to block the door as best he could. He glanced into the room briefly and sighed. This sight, this right now was what he had seen many times already but every time he saw it it got more difficult not easier. He'd seen so many lost already he couldn't stay here and watch either him or Henry go down the same road as well.
"Henry I think it's time we go." He didn't wait for Henry to say anything as he picked up his bag and started walking towards the door. If they left now there should be less chance of any zombies attacking them. The longer they waited the more chance they would be attracted to the place.

Henry watched as George was boarded away, out of sight. His heart went out to the guy. Poppy whined by his side and he crouched to scruff the dog behind her ears. "I know girl," he whispered before he stood. "You find a pregnancy ward? There's a pregnant woman right, so we should try to find something for her. Quickly."
