James sighed, heavily, "Kir..." he climbed out of bed, ruffled his less-than-perfect hair, and picked up the photo very gingerly, and turned it over to glance the writing. At the names, James furrowed his brow and brought the picture close to his face, turning it over and glancing repeatedly at the children on the front.

The back of the photo had written the names of the children.
' Link Star-Anise, Kiara Star-Anise, and Ian Star-Anise. Ian's 7th Birthday Party.'

Jackie smiled as she drank the hot heaven in her mug. Nothing woke you up better than a cup of coffee in the morning.

Staring at the picture in confusion for a few moments more, he placed it back on the cabinet delicately and walked over to Kira, who was still sat on his bed. He picked her up easily, something he'd grown accustomed to over the years, and carried her out of the room, very concious of the facgt that there was smashed glass on the floor. He, in fact, did not put her down until he had reached the bottom of the staircase, at which point she leapt from his arms in search of Jackie. Kira liked Jackie.

Jackie was sitting at the kitchen table drinking her coffee when she heard the other two come downstairs. The house seemed alot more inviting in the light even if it was full of antiques. Unceremoniously, Jackie shouted,
"I've got coffee in here for any that want it!"

Kira bounded into the room and beamed at Jackie, then jumped onto a chair and sat cross-legged, swaying in a hyperactive manner. James followed in after her, watching her with a slight amazement on his face - catlike still, but more cheerful and human-esque than ever before in her history.
"Is there a cup of tea going?"

"Sorry, but no, tea is not strong enough for this New Yorker" Jackie said enjoying her brew. "but there should be some tea around here somewhere. Its what Aunt...." Jackie stopped herself and looked down and the half empty mug in her hands. Even just mentioning her hurt like a gash in her heart.

"I'll find it," said James, without allowing a lull in the conversation and quickly changing the topic. Kira turned her head to the side and looked at Jackie inquisitively.
"Don't be sad," she said, chirpily.

"Kind of hard not to be" Jackie admitted. "It was only me and her since I was ten and ran away from the orphanage. She was the only mother I'd ever known." Jackie didn't know why she was saying these things out loud she was usually quiet about her past.

"You don't have to be sad. It's not about what happened then, it's about what happens now. Everything happens for a reason," said Kira with a smile. At this point, James turned around and fixed his eyes on the pair. The fact that Kira was talking in a human, empathic way was one thing. The fact that another human was taking this as actual human contact and responding to it astounded him.

Jackie thought all her tears had left her the night before but she could feel them whelling up inside her once more and she had to force them back down.
"Thank you, Its Kira, right?" The night before was such a blur, Jackie was trying to remember if that was the name that was mentioned.

Kira nodded vibrantly. "Yes. It means kitty like. Because I like kitties." she giggled, and it was incredibly difficult to say that she was in fact a similar age to Jackie, her linguistic elegance being so basic and child-like.

Jackie smiled. "I do too." she admitted. "i used to have a black kitten when I was little, well she wasn't really mine. She was a stray and I fed her. I called her Kit, short for kitty. I didn't have much of an imagination when it came to names."

"I wish I had a kitten," said Kira, looking whistful. "But I don't need a kitten. I'm happy anyway," she said, beaming at Jackie again. James was staring at the back of Kira's head, looking absolutely asounded, for several reasons - one, she'd sat still for over 15 seconds, two, that she was holding a perfectly human conversation, three, that she was happy, and four, that someone else had accepted her. It was a completely new scene to him.

Jackie caught James staring at Kira. She couldn't understand him or what he was thinking. Right now she was torn on wanting to be alone with him to ask him about it or very glad that Kira was there and they weren't alone like last night.
"Well, maybe someday you're brother will let you have a kitten." Jackie said but still watching James.

Kira looked like that idea had never occured to her and turned around sharply, causing James to jump quite a bit.
"Can I have a kitten, James?" she asked excitedly. James smiled softly at her.
"I think I've got one too many kitties already, Kir. Plus, you know, the fact that we're not living anywhere really wouldn't be fair on a kitten."
"We could live here! I want to live here, James."
James laughed, and stroked Kira's hair. "That's not really your choice, Kir." he said, laughing again as she pouted.
