Carrie stripped, dunked herself into the water all whilst keeping her eyes on the surroundings. It was nice to be told that the area was safe but she couldn't help the paranoia that crept in with loud footsteps.
She sighed into the water. It had been months since she could wash herself. There weren't many rivers or bodies of water. And what little there was was usually a nice hunting ground for the monsters out here. She sunk further into the water until just her nose and eyes remained, relishing in the water.
It took her a while to become satisfied but she eventually climbed out and changed into the sheepskin. Her clothes were dunked into the water next and she laid them out against some rocks to dry. With that she sat, leaned her head back and felt sleep take over.

Jacob's eyes started to get sore after what felt like hours up in the trees staring at the ground. Around his neck were three rabbits on a rope, freshly hunted and ready to be skinned. He figured Carrie wouldn't have had rabbit in a while, but the rabbits loved this part of the woods and if you were quick enough you could catch them pop their head out of their burrows. He was disappointed with his catch, the rabbits seemed to be fewer today, but three should be plenty between two, he could always catch more tomorrow.
He headed back to where he camped, and saw Carrie sleeping leant on a tree. He smiled to see she had followed his advice, it felt good to have the trust of another human. He prepared the rabbits for cooking, made a small fire and skewered the meat evenly on two rods, letting them cook over the fire. The sun had set now and the fire was their only light. Jacob decided to let Carrie sleep until the meat was cooked, she probably hadn't slept properly for a while. He sat, cross-legged in front of the fire, absent-mindedly turning the skewers as his stomach rumbled.

"Hey." Jacob spoke to wake Carrie up. "Rabbit?" he smiled as he held up a skewer with nicely-charred meat on it.

Carrie sat up and rubbed tired eyes awake. "Yeah, erm, thanks." She took the skewer and eyed it with trepidation before she took a cautious bite. "Mmm," it was delicious. Best food she'd had in a long while.
"This is great," she muttered as she tore the chunks of meat off the skewer and chewed happily. For a few minutes she could forget about the world in which they were members of. Could forget the monsters that stalked about.

He couldn't help but laugh a little at the way she was devouring the meat, like she hadn't eaten in weeks. "It's just rabbit." he replied with his charming smile.

"Yeah well," she couldn't help the flicker to the corners of her mouth. "You'll be surprised how good anything tastes after weeks of nothing."

Jacob only let his smile drop when he had turned around to face the river. He wanted her to stay, loneliness was the worst part of this world. He knew better than to hope though, everyone ends up feeling that they will be better off on their own, feeling like everyone will let them down. It would be only a matter of time before he would be on his own again. Plus, he got a good feeling from helping her out, feeding her and giving her shelter.
"I could get us some deer or something later, there are even smaller monsters that don't taste too bad toasted." he was speaking uncomfortably quickly, but he didn't seem to be able to stop himself, "and I can show you how to make weapons, if you want."

Carried nodded absently. Her mind was already working. She'd not come across many humans. Those that she had come across were adamant with going their own way. If she didn't know any better that was the last thing Jacob wanted.
She waved a hand. "I'm fine. I know how to defend myself." She'd been here long enough.
With a sigh she stood and fingered her now dry clothes. She turned to face Jacob and arched her brows. "Can I get changed? Alone?"

"Sorry, yeah." Jacob replied, no more smile on his face. He wandered off through the trees. He'd made a fool of himself and he knew it. He didn't want to go back to his camp and see her before she left. He didn't know how to feel and he couldn't understand what he was feeling. After a couple of minutes he sat and leant against a tree, twiddling his thumbs and feeling sorry for himself. After a few more minutes he heard twigs snapping ahead and his head shot up to look. It suddenly dawned on him that he had not brought his bow. As silently as he could he stood and climbed up a couple of branches on the tree he had been leaning on. He stared ahead, listening for every sound to try and figure out what was out there. He heard another snap to his left, and then another to his right. He was surrounded. He remembered Carrie and worried, hoping whatever it was hadn't gotten to her too.

Carrie waited until Jacob was gone before she jumped back into her regular clothes. There was a certain comfort and safety being dressed in your own clothes. Especially around strangers.
She'd just pulled her pants back on, had grabbed one shoe in her hand, when she heard a snap of twigs. Her head shot up and she froze, ears listening intently. Silence radiated for a few seconds and she rushed through putting her shoes on.
Then there came the snapping of several twigs. She grabbed her knife, stood, and backed up closer towards the lake. If need be she could always make a swim for it.

The one in front of him shifted and he caught a glimpse. It was a Gantox; very large bear-like creatures with 3 eyes. They tend to travel in packs and this behaviour was very common for them, they have a keen sense for hunting humans. He knew he could kill it with his bow; an arrow through the centre eye would penetrate the brain. There was no chance he could go back for it, they were waiting to pounce. He also knew there would be one with Carrie now. Unless she came running with his bow he was pretty much screwed. He decided he would try and climb through the branches back to camp, at least being off the ground was a start. He took a deep breath and then started to jump branch to branch as quickly as he could, and the Gantox growled in sequence as they chased after him.

Low growls surrounded her and she tightened her hold on her knife. She could probably fight her way out of the upcoming fight, but she was still worried that the fight could be her last. With a swallow of the fear that dared to rise she steadied her footing and looked around her. "Come on you piece of crap."
The Gantox appeared and she stepped back. "Crap." If there was one there was a pack nearby. She stopped backing up and readied herself. It looked at her, its teeth bared and its feet bringing it closer. "Come on," she muttered.

He could see his camp, and he could see her face-to-face with a Gantox. The other three were in pursuit of him, he couldn't take them right to her because they'd rip her to shreds. Then he remembered his favourite hunting spot and hoped to God his bow would still be there as he detoured further into the forest to find it. He kept jumping and climbing tree to tree, thankful of the thick, wide branches. He couldn't afford to lose his footing now. He just tried to think about getting his bow. As long as he had his bow he would be fine.

The Gantox took another step and Carrie took another step towards the lake. She wondered if they could swim. With a firm expression she narrowed her eyes and stared at the creature. It jumped. She ducked, knife raised and rolled to one side. The Gantox knocked over a pot of water and Carrie rushed to get her feet underneath herself.
She turned, stood and fell when the Gantox landed atop her. It's teeth were bared and gnarling at her neck, chomping the air with desperate hunger. One of her arms were under its chest, pushing it back whilst the other was pressed against its throat, the knife clutched tightly at the wrong angle.
It snarled and she moved her head to one side to avoid the gnashing mouth. Claws struck her shoulders and side, tearing at the skin underneath and she groaned. As it hit her for the fifth time she snapped her eyes open and pushed. She managed to shove the beast away and sat up, knife pointed forward.
The burning of her skin was ignored as it pounced, as expected, at her once more. She lifted her free arm up, catching it in the jaw and shoved the knife forward into its chest. The Gantox whimpered and she twisted the knife, wriggled the slim metal in its place before she pulled it out and dropped the lifeless body by her side.
It was now, as she let herself breathe deep breaths that she felt the full ache in her arms. She wanted out of here. If that was even possible.

Jacob kept leaping through the branches hoping the Gantox hadn't killed Carrie. The other three were still chasing him as he reached his bow and arrows. "Oh thank God!" He loaded them his bow quickly as he could and shot the first Gantox in the head. It took two more arrows before he was down and by that time the other two were slashing at the tree. As the tree began to fall he reached out for the branch of the next. He grabbed it and was left dangling as the other tree crashed to the floor. The Gantox swiped at his feet and he swung out of the way as best he could. The second Gantox tore his leg and he screamed as he felt its claw go through his flesh.
