It is set in modern times mostly for convenience. Also it means that if anything new happens in the world it can be referenced and brought into the story. It is going to start on the 3rd of September on a Saturday.
I will be starting the story in Blackpool during a typical fun day out with families everywhere! Things are in full swing and everyone is having fun!
I’m not going to be too specific with the monsters in this story at least to begin with. At the moment I have a few ideas but I like the idea of people contributing with different features as they come up with them to add variety and means that even I don’t know the twists which could occur later in the story. _______________________________________________________
Jeremy sat with his friends Sue and Morris; they were on Blackpool pleasure beach on a weekend out and had decided to take a break from wandering the endless shops which spanned the seafront. The three of them were 17 years of age and were taking their first trip together while they were on a break from college. They all came from Manchester and up until this point had led typical, unexciting lives.
“We could go to the aquarium?” Suggested Sue.
“I’m not all that keen on fish to be honest.” Morris was a very fussy person and moaned about the activities they had participated in all weekend but it was very easy to convince him to do it anyway.
“Oh come on it’s only there!” Sue pointed to the building no more than 40 yards away.
“Yer come on Morris who knows maybe you’ll find someone that looks like you.” Jeremy then stood up and ran followed closely by Sue and Morris.
They had been wandering around staring at all sorts of bizarrely coloured fish that came in all shapes and sizes. After around 40 minutes they decided they had had enough and ventured back outside. They stood pondering what they should do next when a scream sent chills down their spines. They looked to the sea where a women was been attacked by what looked like a shark. All you could see was its fin. Until it stood up…

“Look Cass, it’s me or him! You need to sort yer head out because I’m fuckin’ sick of it!”
Her vacant stare wasn’t much of a response as she sat on the benches by the seafront, a cigarette freshly lit in her hand. Her eyes gazed endlessly at the boundless horizon of the greeny-browny-bluey frontier ahead, the crashing waves and the figures of boats and ships as they left for different towns, different lands, different worlds. Her thoughts became a trail which faded into nothingness, much like the trails those boats would leave behind on their wayward adventures. She brought the fag to her thin lips which coiled around the cigarette as she took a hasty drag and felt the burning yet blissful sensation burrow deep into her. She wasn’t even sure why she smoked, but probably for times like this.
“Are you even listenin’! You mad… bitch you!” he yelled again. His name was Arthur, bright young university chap, bit temperamental – acted like a complete child when he couldn’t have his own way. Story being she had slept with Arthur as a one night stand, slept with another guy for a couple of nights, and now both had become hopeless Casanovas with a bit of slang thrown in. She had “ruined” their lives, but she had seen adolescent melodrama from the likes of these characters previously. She could see Arthur turning red, his scowl a beautiful portrait of rage, whilst in the background trailed a cheery little ice cream truck playing the daintiest of tunes, with children running with grinning faces. The contrast made her chuckle. She took another drag of her cig.
“Arthur, look. I don’t want… anything. My head’s a mess and right now, I just want to be left alone. Please accept that for me!” she muttered as the sea breeze brushed past her cheek and left her hair flickering over her ear. She made no eye contact with him, just stared at the ground. There were twelve cigarette ends around her feet - she’d like to imagine these were from previous victims of those who had to deal with dramatic lovestruck idiots.
“Fine. Nobody wants me. I guess you never loved me. And I thought we could…” he trailed into the typical break-up/rejection emotional blackmail conversation. The word love cropped up enough times to turn Cass’ stomach. She finished her cigarette and flicked it onto the floor. Thirteen now.
Soon enough Arthur must’ve gotten bored of speaking to a wall, as Cass had been ignoring him, her eyes still wandering the horizon, the flickering blue which never stopped. She heard Arthur walk off and mutter something about deleting phone numbers, but she hadn’t the strength within her to even be bothered with such a situation. She whistled a primary school hymn which came to mind, and looked longingly to the sky.
“Shaark!” some child cried in a shrill pitch, but she didn’t look around – in her eyes, kids were attention-seeking little bags of flesh. She caught a whiff of fish and chips, and her stomach rumbled in anticipation as she thought she could spend the last in her wallet on dinner and a bottle of wine for the night. Only, something was really wrong.
It wasn’t just this one pesky shit of a kid which screamed out. Many people did, of every demographic, from pre-school to pensioner. Some just swore to high heavens, some just screamed ear-splittingly loud. All of it coming from the beach, just a little ways out to sea to be exact. Cass stood to full height, a wee 5’4”, and could see a fin of sorts. A woman was thrashing about like wild, and bystander effect really took hold as everybody was shouting to save her but nobody seemed to be stepping forth. She was shocked, as a shark in Blackpool was rarer than anything she could imagine. She just kind of stood there, gobsmacked, paralyzed like the many others around watching this unreal situation.

The screaming continued and a few people had turned and began to run. Most still hadn’t processed what was actually going on and so couldn’t do much else but stand there and pray that this wasn’t actually happening. Sue spoke first.
“Guys we need to get out of here…” She was stuttering and she was quite clearly shaking.
“But…but… shouldn’t we try to help…” Morris tried to sound brave but it just came out as a small child who was afraid of monsters being under his bed.
“HELP HOW?!” screamed Sue. “We’re 17, where are the lifeguards?”
Jeremy hadn’t spoken through this entire situation. He wasn’t exactly a commanding person and was far from the most confident of people. But now wasn’t the time for being brave or heroic. It was clear from the amount of blood that the woman wasn’t going to survive so he said the only thing that made sense to him at the time.
“We need to get out of here! Now!” He grabbed his two friends by the arms and began to run towards the main road located behind them. As they ran more screams followed from other areas of the beach. Whatever was happening it was clear the further in land they were the safer they would be.

Malcolm sighed. The heavy swish of the door behind him was just a kick in the teeth for the very fact that he now had no job. Kids screaming with joy and people happily lounging on the benches made his frown deepen. Not even the sun could make the corners of his mouth twitch.
He'd gotten two steps from the office when his pocket buzzed, irritating another sigh from his mouth. Wrenching it to his ear he hissed, "What?"
"Jeez, anyway to treat your mate?" He groaned. Peter was the best guy friend anyway could've asked for and was his best friend since they were kids. "Just wanted to check we were still on for drinks tonight."
"Yeah," he ran a hand over his face. "Sorry about that. I've just been sacked."
There was a moment of silence, "Harsh. Just like that?"
"Juat like that."
"Shit man, well, drinks on me. You free now then?"
A faint flicker of a smile ghosted onto his face. "Sure. I just gotta drop off my last payslip."
"Alright, well, I'm off in twenty anyway so if I'm late, I'll still be there."
Another flicker of a smile. "Yeah, sure. Later." He hung up and felt a little better about that days turn of events. Peter was going to be paying for his drunken evening. The pub they were going to was a nice cheap bar that was visited by lots of students looking for breaks from education. Unfortunately, it meant he had to maneuver is was along the pier of Blackpool's Pleasure Beach and through the throngs of many people there to relax.
After quickly stopping off at home and changing his suit into a relaxed pair of jeans and button down shirt. The bar was still partly empty, the students not likely to turn up to later in the evening, which left him plenty of seats to choose from.
He ordered two beers and stole the seats in the corner, where he and Peter usually sat, and waited. Thirty minutes passed and he was close to ordering a second pint or drinking Peter's when a scream outside caught his attention. An eyebrow quirked and he paused, eyes fixed on the bars door.
Another scream.
Narrowing his eyes he glanced at the waiting pint, decided beer's not to be wasted, and threw back the drink. Wiping his mouth he stood, more screams penetrating through the walls, and made for the door.
When he opened the door and stepped outside, he simply froze and took in the scene. Children and adults alike were screaming, teenagers were either running or crowding together, phones out. Another quick analysis told him the source for the screaming was the growing crowd of teenagers and adults alike.
Stepping towards the growing circle, he pushed his way through and stopped. Four people stood in front of him but he needn't get any closer to see the shark like creature that was currently enjoying a snack on a woman.
Blood was pooling on the floor, the woman's screams slowly dying and Malcolm found himself staring off into the waters below them. If there was one creature there was bound to be more.
As if on cue, more shark like creatures jumped over the railings and onto the pier, quickly grabbing a tourist or two in their large jaws with rows upon rows of teeth.
He didn't stand around much longer, but quickly pushed his way back out of the now dispersing crowd and made a dash for the car park, hoping that no shark like creatures were going to spring out of nowhere and make him into a tasty snack.

“Fuck. Fuck. No, no, no!” Cass muttered under her breath as she watched one young boy, no older than ten, gripped in the jaws of a hammerhead menace. The teeth sunk deep into the thigh, like a hot knife through butter, and a swift move tore off the limb, leaving a jagged and bloody tear on the shrieking youth.
She whimpered somewhat as she made a sudden turn to move with the stampede of beach visitors, who were heading towards the arcades, shops, chippies – anywhere away from these beasts. Her shoes, knackered Converse boots, weren’t optimum to her fleeing; cursing herself for her bad shoe choice could wait. This was.. unbelievable. She kept going through it in her head, but her legs were on autopilot – tight black jeans which chafed like a bitch. She wasn’t exactly the most athletic character and her heavy breathing indicated a lack of stamina, her eyes set where the rest of the people were going – some to a casino arcade, some to a car park, some just wherever the tide of tourists would take them. The snarls, screams, shouts, stomps, snaps heading from the seafront were catching up; loud carnivorous beasts biting chunks out of frightened people.
“Aiigh!” she screeched, the fishy breath rushing down her neck as she felt the exhale of a marine monster inches away from her. Her pixie cut blonde hair stood on end and goosebumps raised all over her body. Panic ensued in the crowd as the torrent of shark-like creatures didn’t stop; more and more burst out of the murky sea. CHOMP, and another woman was tore in half by two of the creatures, each fighting over the carcass of the pensioner.
She made it to the car park, just – tripping over a fallen person, she faceplanted the gravel. Grazing and cutting her face, she spat little stones out. She tried to push herself up, but a running person knocked her back down. Fear struck the heart of Cass, knowing in seconds she’d be fish food.
“SOMEBODY HELP!” she yelped as she began to push herself up. She could feel her face, arm and knee bleed slightly.

As the group turned and began to run and large orange claw crashed through the planks they were standing on and closed around Jeremy’s leg. It then started pulling him down to the beach below.
“Jeremy!” Morris shouted as he grabbed onto his arm and stopped him from being pulled to his death. For what seemed like an eternity they were in a stalemate but Morris was quickly losing strength and his shoes weren’t ideal for keeping him planted to the wet floorboards.
“AHHHHH!” Jeremy shouted as the claw tightened around his leg, blood began to pour from the wound. It was clear the creature could just take it clean off but it was playing with them, it Wanted to have a bit of fun before it killed them.
“Sue where the hell are you?!” Morris yelled, he hadn’t noticed until now that she’d disappeared. But then she ran out of the aquarium with a metal bar in hand and took a wild swing through the gap in the boards. Apparently hitting the creature square on because there was an inhuman screech and it released its grasp allowing Morris to pull Jeremy back up. The two boys stared at Sue. She was wearing a yellow skirt, white shirt and a blue cardigan. But they knew this wasn’t the real her. She was very athletic and typically wore clothes you would think more suited to males.
“What are you guys staring at? Someone had to do the manly thing and hit the bastard.” Sue had a special way of smiling which could send chills down your spine and you knew you were about to feel a lot of pain. But luckily for Morris and Jeremy they wouldn’t be on the end of it for a change.
“Right well oh manly one, how about helping me get Jeremy out of here?” Morris tried to hide the fact he was terrified but it wasn’t really working. They pulled Jeremy off the wooden boards and onto concrete so they could see what the damage was. He had a lot of cuts out of his jacket and the white shirt he wore was covered in blood from where a plank had dug into his side. His jeans were hugely torn and like most of him were covered in blood.
“Are you gunna be able to walk on it?” Sue asked but she already knew the answer. It was at this point that Morris took off his green T-shirt, all it left him with was his now hugely scraped shoes and his bright orange shorts but at this point no one was really going to pull him up on how silly he looked. He then tied his shirt around Jeremy’s leg to stop the bleeding.
“I may not have gone into the army like my dad, but he taught me a few useful things.” Morris said with a slight smile. So they picked Jeremy up moaning and wincing and starting moving towards the central area. Behind them it was clear from the sound a lot of people were still there and even though they knew it seemed cruel, it would allow them the chance to escape.

The car park was in sight and he could see his trusted Ford sitting where he had parked it. He felt the speed in his legs increase as he forced them to pump faster, urging his body to safety, when his phone rang. Grumbling underneath his breath, he ignored the ringing, threw a catious glance over his shoulder and jumped over the hood of his car to hide on the other side. The loud screams and shouts of panic and pain was ignored as he looked at the caller ID to see PETER emblazoned on the screen. "Where the fuck are you?" he asked immediately, struggling to hear himself speak over the sound of his heart beating in his ears and his heavy breathing.
"You are not going to believe me."
Malcolm stuck his head around the side of his car, the creatures still in sight along with the people that were still able to run and those that weren't. "Try me."
He spent an agonized minute listening to Peter tell him about a group of creatures, the size of an elephant with a large tail that had some form of stinger on the end, that had appeared in the middle of town, seemingly from the ground. 'What the fuck is going on?' he asked himself, listening as Peter told him how he and a few others had barricaded themselves within a church, unsure of how long the doors would hold.
Malcolm quickly cited off his story of the shark like creatures that had appeared on the pier. By the time he'd finished his story Peter's only response was, "Well shit me."
It was with this statement that Malcolm found himself surrounded in an eerie silence that sent shivers running down his spine. "One sec," he whispered and pushed himself to take another cursory glance around the side of his car. There was no longer anybody running around, anyone he saw either dead or dying. The creatures were roaming around, snagging a few extra snacks here and there and others slowly making their way towards the car park.
The sound of cars revving made him turn his head and watch as a couple with their two kids tried to accelerate with all the horsepower they could through the maze of cars. Three of the creatures' attention were grabbed by the sound and Malcolm forced himself to remain quiet as the creatures ran for the car. One of them ran straight into the front of it, sending the car up in the air and landing on its roof.
Screams followed and he gulped, watching as the creatures tried to rip their way into the interior of the car. Tilting his head he could just make out the sight of a young girl, no older then six, curled up inside the wreakage. Another glance told him the others didn't have much luck of surviving. "Pete, I gotta go."
He slipped the phone into his pocket, drew out his car keys and gulped. The girl's terrified face flashed behind his eyes and he quietly pushed the key into the door, opened it and slid in, closing the door behind him as quietly as he could.
Malcolm slipped the key into the ignition, took another glance at the car and gulped. He turned the car on and watched as the creatures attention switched from the wrecked car to his.

The person Cass tripped over was swiftly dragged away from her, she could hear the screams of the person shortly cut off by a deep gulp as a creature which could only be described as a bipedal blowfish swallowed sharply and the crunch of bones could be heard. Cass, injured as she was, spent no time dicking about in her retreat. Minor facial scathes compared to what the nautical nasties would do.
“Mummy? Mummy?” she heard a kid whimper, prodding the body of a half eaten lady who was bleeding violently onto the promenade. The kid’s voice was breaking, and in Cass’ heart it reminded her of that scene on Lion King – Simba nudging Mufassa. She wanted to reach over, hold the child and help him run away. A fierce orange claw struck down on him though, snapping his shoulder blade in two as he fell to the ground to become a meal for one of these strange creatures – a scuttling little mouth tearing flesh off the child’s face. Cass was a little sick in her mouth, but kept running.
Winding through alleys, side streets, squares, ginnels and car parks, Cass found herself utterly lost but inland. The snarls and gnashing of the marine menaces turned fainter, as the initial assault from the sea had finished it’s primary casualties. She imagined the fiends wandering up and down the promenades, picking at those who had fallen. She swallowed her fear, whimpered a little – winced when she realized she had lost her cigarettes in the panicky flight.
Her face was scratched something bad, but she endured the stinging for now. She sat down at the back of a chippy, the smell of battered fish lingering in the air. The area was deserted, and she sat on the step leading into the kitchen, the door locked. She paced her breathing, calming down, the worst of it all appearing to be over. There was terror in the air, screams and escaping cars, the cries of people – but the initial strike was over. Now it’d be a case of getting as far inland as possible.
She stopped her train of thought, her near-crying, he near anxiety attack. A bestial roar of some creature filled the air, no more than fifty feet away. Her first thought, to slide away underneath one of the massive recycling bins behind the chippy. She didn’t have the time to run. She wedged herself awkwardly under it, two or three used condoms floating about in a puddle didn’t make her feel clean but cleanliness meant little in comparison to survival. She held her nose due to the smell, noticing a half-eaten chip barm covered in best described as green fuzz.
Through her slim line of vision, Cass could see two huge stomping feet, a steely grey colour. A tail was dragging on the floor, split off on the end slightly. The heavy footsteps were approaching her fast and she tried not to panic. She gulped. She winced. Shed balled her hands into fists. It did no good. She waited until the inevitable end.

“Did we lose them?” Morris asked, his voice shaking violently now.
“I’m not sure, one second I’ll go upstairs and look outside.” Sue ran upstairs and peeped through a small gap in the blinds of the building they had holed up in. She came downstairs and sat next to the others. Right I can still see a lot of them wandering around, but I don’t think any of them saw us.
“Where the hell are we anyway guys?” She asked looking around.
“I think it’s just a cafe but I didn’t see anything when we came in.” Morris joined Sue in looking around. Jeremy had been lain down on some clothes with a pillow propping up his Leg. He no longer had the strength to moan or complain about his pain so he just lay still trying to keep himself awake.
“Sue, I don’t know how much longer Jeremy will be okay for if we can’t get him some medical help.” Morris was getting very worried now. His T-shirt was no longer containing the blood from his wound. Sue sighed.
“Look Morris, it might get to the case where one of us has to leave to see if we can find anyone. If it gets to that you’re better off being the one who stays here. You know more about medical stuff than me and I’m also a lot fitter than you so I can try and outrun them if I need to.” She looked down at Jeremy and tried to think of where other people may have run to.
“Look Sue, if it does come to that…Please just be careful. Okay?” There was no denying that Morris hated the idea of any of them having to leave their shelter but he knew Jeremy needed help. There were shadows passing the window and they knew from the shapes they weren’t human but as far as they could tell none of them could hear them.
“…Do I not get a say in this then?” Jeremy said in a very weary voice. “No not really Jeremy, you need the help and we plan of getting it for you.” Sue said in a soothing voice, stroking his head.
“Just rest and we’ll focus on finding someone to help you.” Sue then stood up and moved close to the door.
“Right after I leave lock the door and keep an eye for me coming back, you may need to open it in a hurry.” She had assumed a commanding voice to try and give the others a bit more hope.
“Alright but please be careful.” Morris said. Sue then left the building they were in. She looked both ways and although she saw a few of the creatures none were looking her way and so she slipped out and began to move quickly but quietly down the street looking for anywhere people might be held up.

He turned the car as quickly as he could, backing out of the parking spot and keeping his gears in reverse. Malcolm didn't change out of reverse, being sure to bank between other parked cars inside the car park. It took him a total of ten minutes to dodge the oncoming creatures and keep his car in relatively, one piece.
Turning the corner around another set of cars, narrowly twisting the steering wheel away from one fo the larger creatures, he could still hear the faint screams of the little girl. With a sigh, he wrapped one hand around the doors handle and turned the car with his left hand. Taking a deep breath, he pushed the handle, opened the door and took a plunge out of the door.
It took him a few seconds to pick himself up, but he shimmied himself inbetween two cars and crouched, watching as the creatures kept their attention on the crashed car. Quickly, he made his way through the maze of cars that still stood still and inched his way towards the whimpering child.
"Hey," he whispered, "come here." The girl shook her head and it took him a few minutes of ushering before she crawled out of the wrecked car and allowed him to wrap his arms around her. "I'm going to get you out of here okay?"
The girl snivelled, wiped an arm across her face and whimpered up at him, "What about Mummy and Daddy?"
It took him a moment to come up with a response, settling with a small, "I'm sorry," before carrying her awkwardly through the car park. The creatures still hung about and it took him twenty minutes to navigate into an abandoned cafe without catching the eyes of the shark like things. Once inside, he sat the girl down on the counter, pushed a number of tables against the door and even pushed a few against the window to stop any from entering that way.
When he was sure that no thing would be able to get in, he approached the girl and tried to smile kindly at her. "Hey. How are you doing? What's your name?"
A snivel. "Lucy."
"How are you doing Lucy?"
She snivelled again. "Okay. I want my Mummy."
"I know Lucy I know. We're just going to wait here for a while."
A slight whimper left her mouth and Malcolm ran a hand over his face. He had no idea what to do and what's more he'd somehow devoted himself to protecting Lucy.

Cass remembered a piece of information she learnt a long time ago, about how a shark could smell a drop of blood in a large body of water. She swallowed fear as she thought the same might apply on land – if so, she was well and truly fucked. She imagined the beast gobbling her, crunching her limbs like they were crisps, piercing through her skin like it was tissue. Her organs being crushed as it would masticate her limp body in it’s giant maw, before roaming the streets for more food. She would rather it kill her quickly than suffer some kind of torture akin to a Saw film.
“Hyaaagh!”
She had shut her eyes for a while now, knowing it would be bound to be her doom in this cramped dirty space. But she opened them to see the steely grey wide stumpy feet stumble, a pair of black army style boots stomp and a deep crimson fluid splatter the floor. She remained frozen, seeing these feet crash and dance a messy stomping brawl. Thrashing and swinging and punching and growling; for a good twenty seconds this continued until the great grey beast collapsed covered in deep red stains, great wide slices in the body. The mouth of the beast opened and the dying gasps of the creature let out warm exhales into Cass’ face, stinky fishy breath.
For a few seconds nothing happened, this strange military boot wearing person breathing exhausted sighs before falling to their knees. Army style camouflage pants, scuffed and dirty. The deep exhales sounded like a man, probably young. After a short while he got up, kicking the grey bleeding body straight in the side before hitting the bin in which caused a great sound.
“I don’t care who you are, get the fuck up and follow me!”
Cass was relieved, and frightened, and felt compelled. She begun to slide her dirty body out from underneath the bin and do as this stranger asked.

Sue continued to move along the street. There was no one moving around now. She presumed that everyone who was still alive had already gotten as far away as possible. Suddenly she was alerted by a man moving towards her.
“Hey can you help me? My friends really hurt and he can’t move.” She asked him as he got closer. It was then that she noticed he was bleeding heavily from his chest.
“Are you alright?” She asked not really expecting a good response. He sort of mumbled through the pain and collapsed to the ground at her feet. A huge claw sticking out of his back. Sue screamed and ran down a nearby alleyway. She now realised how stupid she had been, the monsters would be drawn her way. She turned around and saw shadows moving towards her and she frantically looked around for somewhere she would be able to hide.

The roads were clear. There were no monsters nearby and Malcolm sighed with relief. For now, they were safe. Lucy tugged on his sleeve and he looked down. "Where's my mummy and daddy?"
Picking her up he sat her on an empty table and sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Lucy, I'm sorry. But your parents aren't around any more."
"where'd they go?"
He bit his lip and ducked his eyes. How could he tell a young girl, no older then seven, her parents and family were dead and she wasn't going to be seeing them again. "I'm sorry Lucy. They're not coming back, they, they're in heaven."
"What?" She cried, tears filling her eyes as she broke down and cried. She sobbed loudly and Malcolm felt his heart break in two. Not sure what to do, he wrapped his arms around her and placed her on his hips, letting her cry in to his shoulder and tried to calm her down. He couldn't let her cry too much louder for the creatures were still out there somewhere and he knew that.
It took about ten minutes for her cries to turn into snivels and a further five for her snivelling to turn into whimpers with the odd hiccup. It was going to be a long day for him and he sat her down again as she began to nod off on his shoulder. Shedding his jacket, he wrapped it into a ball, placed it under her head and told her to rest and she promptly did, letting him think to himself.
He decided to take a look around and found an old radio covered in dust but out of batteries and there seemed to be no batteries around anywhere. With a sigh, he tucked it into his pants pocket and carried on looking, finding packets of food that were still in date and gathered them up, placing them onto the table next to Lucy.
She was still asleep and he decided to check the back doors and finding the alleyway behind it empty, blocked the door and partially blocked every doorway between them and the alleyway. When he was sure that they weren't in any immediate danger, he sat down with his back against the counter and let out a large sigh. Every ounce of tiredness was finally catching up with him and he closed his eyes to rest for a short while.
When he woke back up, Lucy was curled into his side, his arm around her and he couldn't bring himself to disturb her and settled once more into another nap. The next time hie eyes opened, growls could be heard and shadows moved past the windows.
Eyes growing wide, he placed one hand over Lucy's mouth and carefully woke her up, shushing her when she made a noise. He shuffled her behind the counter and quietly moved the barricade to the back rooms away and shuffled her in, replacing the barrier.
He watched through the gaps as the creatures stuffed noses into the gaps in the windows and sniff. A roar filled the room and Malcolm placed his hand over Lucy's mouth once more, trying to quieten her before she alerted them to their full presence. He shuffled them further back and closer to the rear door as more creatures appeared to congregrate around the door and windows.
Another roar sounded and Malcolm felt Lucy jump, tears falling down her face and he pinched his eyes shut, hoping that they couldn't smell her fear or even hear the odd whimper that escaped.

He was called Gerard, he said. Shaved head, clean shaven face, a little older than Cass. His eyes were a piercing blue, and they simply screamed instability – they looked twitchy, bloodshot, and covered in dark rings of sleeplessness. He looked ill, pale, vacant, but also on edge and fearful, whilst holding some kind of warrior stance and stern voice. He wielded a fire axe, caked in blood now, which was probably what he’d used to slay the shark being. White knuckle grip tightened around it to the point he began to shake.
After his initial words to Cass, she followed silently as he half-marched with his axe over his shoulder, like some kind of uniformed guard with his rifle. Once or twice she tried to make small conversation but wasn’t met with anything – even a slight change in his solemn facial expression. She just hung back yet followed tightly, wiping herself down from the crap she was covered in.
The streets were dead, in both senses. Not a soul wandered around now, the initial panic being extinguished and now the hiding populace waited in fear more than anything else. A number of bodies littered the streets, and one fishy creature was completely decimated and in a horrific mess. Cass and Gerard looked but continued on their walk – she didn’t even know where she was being taken by Gerard, but thought a man with an axe is better than being on her own.
She swore she heard him whisper something to himself in one voice, then something to himself in another, before stopping and turning his head, beady blue eyes directly staring at Cass.
“We need higher ground. A hotel or something. Let’s go”
He muttered this monotonously before meandering in a direction towards a tall wooden building.

Sue panicked, she could hear something moving towards her but she had no idea what. Fear took hold of her and she fell back against the wall of the alleyway. She heard voices approaching and she realized that there were other survivors. She moved forward smiling hoping they would have some way of transporting Jeremy out of the area.
“Well hello there girly look like you could use some help.” The first of the 3 men spoke coming forward to meet her.
“I need help badly; my friend Jeremy is really badly hurt. I left him with my other friend Morris but we need to get him to a hospital. Do you have any way of helping?” Sue gasped for breathe.
“Well little girl I don’t think we need to rush off like that. I mean you’re here safe with us and to be honest I think we’re fine just the four of us.” He gave a cold smile which sent shivers down Sue’s spine. The second of the three came forward.
“You’re a pretty young thing aren’t you? Why don’t you just leave your friends and stay with us. We can keep you uh… entertained.” He let out a small laugh. “No actually you’re fine; I’m going to go find someone else to help.” Sue started to back away.
“Oh, no you don’t you’re coming with us!” The first man tried to grab her as a door beside him was thrown open and a shark creature grabbed his face in his jaw crushing his skull. The two others that were with him panicked and ran away from the creature. Sue did the same and ran the other way. The shark creature was too busy devouring the other man to notice her slip away. She moved back to the main street and began to run back towards the house where the others were held up.
