Malcolm pinched his eyes shut and waited, listening to dragging steps that gradually and very slowly faded. After several moments, he removed his hand from Lucy's mouth and sighed. "Alright," he said, "Queitly, come on." He stood up slowly and peered around the corner, Lucy's arms wrapped around his leg. It was clear, but he knew that the case wasn't the safest place to stay at the moment.
He turned to the back door and peered outside of that. Eyes scanned the area for several minutes before he crouched in front of Lucy and grabbed her shoulders. "We can't stay here, it's not safe." Lucy started to whimper again and Malcolm worked quickly to quieten her. "Look, there's nothing out there, I checked. And I'm not going to let anything hurt you I promise."
Lucy threwself to wrap her arms around his neck and refused to let go, "Carry me?"
He sighed and nodded. "Sure thing. You just hold on tight." He carefully and awkwardly moved the barricade to the back door and slowly opened the door. The road was empty and he juggled Lucy further up his hip and stepped out into the bright sun. Letting his eyes roam up and down the road, he scurried down the side of the building and peeked his head around the corner. An asda sat opposite them and he looked up and down the road three times before jogging across and trying the doors.
They were locked and he quickly jogged around the back to find the emergency doors open and stepped inside. If they were going to stay anywhere, it was better to stay somewhere with plenty of long life food and drink depending upon how long the beasts were expected to hang around.

Cass and Gerard felt like ghosts; unwelcome in the town, the scuttling or snarling echoing from down alleyways sent shivers down Cass’ spine at least. Gerard, dragging the fire axe like it was nothing, just kept a paranoid vigil on any slight move – a cat dashed from behind bins and made him mutter the word “cunt”. Still, they reached a classic Blackpool hotel – “The Belmont” it was called. It was no more than four stories, a three-star hotel which seemed lifeless. Tapping on the glass of the front door, they were granted no response.
“What do we do Gerard?” Cass asked, panickly. No response. He breathed to himself in an exhausted deep fearful manner, clutching the axe close to his torso, the bloodstained bite of the weapon pointing straight to Cass’ petite frame. She gulped, but he seemed feeble. His piercing blue eyes looked to the greying skies.
“Y’know… I had to put my parents out of their misery Cass”
She looked at him, startled.
“Ma had dementia, father was bedridden. Staying with them… and I saw these things rise from the waters. I… just couldn’t let them… I couldn’t let them be taken like that. I had to do it. Had to..”
Cass saw Gerard’s face remain stone still, although tears formed in the corners of his eyes, waiting to glide down his pale cheeks. She rested a hand on his shoulder, but got a sharp and violent response. He shouted “fuck off!” at the top of his lungs, stopped hugging the axe and smashed it through the glass front door with a loud sound. Three seconds later, silence. Five seconds later, the sound of approaching beasts. Gerard shoved himself through the gap he’d smashed open, cutting himself widely over his stomach. He muttered the same word, before shouting it: “Run”. Cass didn’t know how to react to the unstable man, but followed his advice. Once again, she meandered through street and alley as she heard a wave of creatures head to where she had previously been. She held onto the thought of how Gerard had helped her, but could not stay. She saw the back of an ASDA.
She ran, seeing the foot of a man slide in behind a shutting emergency door. She screamed for help, and sprinted full force in her teary panic.

Sue ran and ran she just wanted to get back to her friends at least then she would feel safer. They would need to figure out a new plan for helping Jeremy. She noticed that a few more of the beasts were out on the street now but she didn't look back after she passed them. She couldn't bare the idea that they would be following her.
All of a sudden she stopped dead. The front door of the building where Jeremy and Morris were lay in fragments over the street. She could hear shouting from upstairs.
"Morris run!" She heard Jeremy shout, this was followed by him screaming for a few seconds before it was cut off completely. Sue was froze in place she didn't know what to do. There was more commotion from the upstairs room and Morris came crashing through the window covered in blood and he landed not too far up the road from where Sue was stood. He didn't move.
"Oh...God..." Sue collapsed to her knees sobbing intensely.

Malcolm hesitated as the door closed behind him. Putting Lucy down he whispered, “Can you hide for a minute? I’ll be right back I promise.”
“Don’t leave me,” the little girl whined, tears beginning to brim her eyes.
He knelt down in front of her, hands on her shoulders, “I’ll be right back I promise. Please, go hide.” He pushed in the direction of a pile of boxes and bags, telling her to duck and not to make any noise just in case. With a sigh, he turned back to the door, looked for any possible weapon he might use and came up empty. Another sigh and he decided to crack the door open.
Through the small crack, he could see a woman rush towards him, evidently seeking safety in the same place he had. Opening the door further, he scanned the streets and beckoned her in, eyes fixed on the roads for any unwanted surprises.

“LET ME IN! PLEASE LET ME IN!”
Cass cried, as she lunged forward and tried to burst through into the building. Panic, panic, panic – she felt her heart palpitating, wanting to leap forward like she wanted to do. She thought of the beasts, how they nearly got her, how they’d be getting Gerard… she thought of how this day had gone from dealing with a brokenhearted weepy student into a nightmare of nautical beasts.
As the man had opened the door, she ran with tears streaming down her flushed cheeks, diving through the door frame. She had made it. She felt safe. She didn’t acknowledge the man – she just fell to the floor and wept, the cold floor with a puddle of sadness. She just held herself on the floor, believing this was sanctuary for now.
Today was too fucked up. She just wanted to lie down, shove her face into her pillow and cry.

Sue slowly got to her feet. Tears streaming down her cheeks and hitting the floor. She couldn't comprehend anything that was happening, the last few hours had seemed so surreal and almost like a nightmare. Who was she kidding it was a nightmare. The difference is this was very much real.
"I can't let them get me." She whimpered and once again began to run, or sort of fun down the street. She ran past the body of Morris, having once last glance at him before moving on. She needed a way of defending herself now, she was out in the open and completely vulnerable in her current state. She rapidly began thinking through the places in Blackpool she knew trying to think where would be best to go. The further inland the better she guessed.
"That old arcade only had two doors and had heavy duty shutters." She knew it had been broken into recently and had installed them to add some more security.
"Right." She set off hoping that she could avoid as many of the creatures as possible, she knew they would be soon following her after all that commotion.

Malcolm closed the door and turned to the collapsed and sobbing girl. Awkwardly, he knelt down next to her and placed a hand on her back, "Hey, are, are you okay?"
"Is it safe?" he heard and he looked up to see Lucy peeking around the edge of the boxes and bags.
He nodded and the little girl ran up to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Who's that?" she whispered.

I've made it - Cass repeated this in her head a good dozen times, weeping into the floor, not moving. She wiped her arm across her mascara streaks which ran down her face. She sniffeled to herself, and looked at the closed door. Through teary eyes, she looked at the kneeling man and then to the little girl.
"He... Hey there. I'm Cass - i'm alright I think. I just... just can't believe it."

It'd taken her a lot longer than she thought it would but finally she made it to the arcade. She'd spent so much time growing up in it that she knew every nook and cranny about it. Sue had finally reached its doors when she noticed a hoard of the creatures standing by the front door. Several of them were soaked in blood and she didn't fancy trying to force her way through them but luckily she knew the back way into the place and so she set off down another street which looked less inhabited.

"My name's Malcolm," he held his hand out to her, intending to give her help getting up. "This Lucy."
The little girl gave a small "Hey," from behind Malcolm. It looked like someone had broken down from the stress of the monsters, like someone had experienced the worst that they could in the time it took for the monsters to first appear to the time it took for him to open the door to ASDA.
He knew that sometimes, people just needed to know that someone was there to help them, to try to make them feel better, even if it's just by listening to their story. He wanted Cass to know that that's what he was there for. He wanted to somehow comfort her.

Cass smiled at the pair of people, but it was a broken smile which represented her joy at safety than true happiness. A survivalist's smile.
"Listen, I don't know what your plan of action is. Me and some stra... me and a friend, we were noticing its quietened down. The havoc... I guess it's died down. I guess what i'm trying to say is tha-"
A bestial roar from no more than one hundred yards away broke her conversation. It sent shivers down Cass' spine.
"What i'm trying to say is that if these creatures are from the sea, we need to move inland. What if more of them come?" she carried on, before reaching for her pocket.
"Ehm, you don't happen to have any smokes? I seem to have dropped mine. And I know we're in a supermarket so I could grab some, but with those things around, I just want to stay put until i've calmed my nerves..."

Sophie moved a bin so that it was beneath the vent. She jumped up onto it and pulled it open. She was lucky it wasn't bolted. She heaved herself up as a creature grabbed her foot. He began pulling her back but she kicked loose and she tumbled into the arcade. As dozens of eyes looked upon her. She felt relieved, finally somewhere she might feel safe.

He dug around in his jacket pocket and retreived a half empty packet of cigarettes. Malcolm kept his cigarettes for times when he was really stressed and needed it. Two were shook free and he handed one to Cassm, put the other in between his fingers and retrieved the lighter from his pocket and lit the two. The plan she'd proposed was run through his mind and he nodded. "Yeah, that erm, sounds good."
Lucy's hands wrapped themselves around his leg and he pulled her closer. "Hey, are you okay?" Her nodding head made him place a kiss to her forehead. "We'll be fine."
Turning his attention back to Cass he tugged on her arm to pull her up. "Come on. We should probably get some food before we leave."

Frankly, Cass didn't want to leave right now. She wanted to yank off her attitude, crawl into bed and cry until it was over. She wanted long nights of lounging and summer days of happiness on the Blackpool promenade. She wanted the past. She wanted home.
"You're right." she muttered, spluttering a little at the cigarette smoke. She remembered promising a long ago ex she'd give up smoking at some point. That was as likely to happen as what was happening now. She shuddered.
She followed Malcolm and Lucy about two paces behind, hand in her pocket and the other holding the fag. She looked sullen, worn out, desperate. Her mind was on auto-pilot.

Sophie was helped up by a random man from the crowd and was very quickly introduced to people and given food and drink. There were a lot of people there surprisingly. There were a lot of children much younger than she was and most looked upset. Her attention was caught by yelling from the other room. Many of the others went silent before the door was bashed open and a group of men came out. There was more shouting, they seemed to be trying to decide on what should happen next.
"What are they arguing about she asked an elderly woman?"
"Basically Fred there thinks we should be heading out and trying to find any more survivors and get out of Blackpool but the rest think it's suicide. Not much can happen until they decide something though." Sophie stopped and studied them whilst joining the others in silence not really knowing what to do.
