Ian came back into view as he finished checking out the perimeter of their camp.
"I set up some up some protection wards and alarms." Ian said not letting his exhaustion show. "Nice fire ladies. What are we eating?"

(Hey, just thought I'd point out, about 3 posts back on tsukinoneko you posted this Miles away in the center of city, a figure all in black knelt down into a pile of soot and ash. The gloved hand pulled an item on a chain, now black from sitting in its enivroment, forth and dusted it a bit. A streak of gold shined through the black. The person recoginzing the Phoenix amulet quickly stuffed it into their pocket. "No one will be able to find it and use it now" a saprano voice said darkly. ) "What do you fancy? I have beans on toast to offer, or... Hot dogs." Akumei laughed a little as she pulled the cans from her bag.

Kendra sighed looking at their prospective fare.
"Bring on the beans then" Ian said with a laugh. "At least both have protein. Dazzle us, Sailor Akumei,with your amazing culinary skills." he teased.

Akumei smirked as she took a knife out from further in the bag and stab the top of the tin unceremoniously, before propping the tin just about the flames.
"Ou la," she said, gesturing to the tin, as she reached into her bag to fetch the bread.

Ian applauded appreciatively and Kendra laughed. The mood seemed lighter with Ian around. He had an easy smile and a happy nature. When the food was done, Ian took the smallest share making certain both girls had enough to eat. He continued to joke and laugh as they supped.
"you two should get some sleep" he said after they finished.

Akumei frowned.
"You're probably right, but so should you..." She glanced down at her worn self and shook her head.
"I will do you a deal: I'll bind my ribs and go to sleep if you wake me in four hours and swap."

"Deal" Ian said grinning at her. Kendra suddenly felt as helpful as a sack of flour. Even if she offered to take a shift, what could she do? She worked in a shop that was now buried in ash and rubble. What good was she to anyone.
"I can take a shift" she said as Ian had started to put together a make-shift bed for her with his jacket. Ian didn't dismiss her offer, for which she was grateful.
"How about you take the first shift tomorrow night? You have had a very long day I think"

Akumei had torn her fuku open unceremoniously, removing a roll of bandage from her bag, inspecting her swollen and mottled ribcage before gritting her teeth and beginning to wrap the bandages tautly around herself.
She hadn't bandaged herself much before. Despite having been taught, again and again, by her Grandmother, the white hot pain was new to her, and combining it with the memory of Grandma Ki, somewhere likely lay crushed by rubble caused silent tears down her dirty cheeks. She turned away from the others to complete her bandage, hands now shaking as she failed to fight back tears.

Kendra had just laid down and Ian was about to sit at the entrance to their make shift camp when he noticed Akumei struggling. He walked over and knelt beside her. Without caring if she was embarrassed, Ian took the bandage from her hands and picked up where she left off.
"Silly cat." he said an affectionate whisper. "you only have to do it by yourself, if you are alone or with untrained people. And considering who trained you, did you really think I couldn't help?" his question didn't require an answer. He just gave his protective brother smile. The one reserved just for her. Being the youngest, he didn't usually get the chance to play the protector, the defender, or the mender, but with Keira it was different. When he finished, Ian wiped the tears from her face and kissed her forehead.
"I promise. I'll find them." Ian stood and headed off so that if Akumei needed more tears she could shed them without fear of him seeing.

Allowing Ian's words to flow like fresh hope, Akumei struggled to smother a sob and sat, crying to herself, until she was able to chastise herself out of it. She swept her dirty palms over her cheeks, smearing her tears away, and then dragged herself back over to Kendra and Ian, lounging unceremoniously, her head on her backpack. She moved closer to the fire, feeling the stillness of New York around her and knowing everything was so very different from the way she'd previously known the world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spluttering suddenly again, the woman watching the sunset over ruined New York raised her already grey-and-black spattered hankerchief to her mouth, removing it again with more specks of darkness across its previously white surface. Disregarding this, she closed her eyes and allowed the breeze to sway her ponytail slightly, trying to feel her sense of direction. She knew this city better than anyone, razed or not, ten years passed or not, and she would find them in it. The only reason she was alive. Nieces. Nephew. Granddaughter. Sheer force of unstoppable Star-Anise will.
Without even considering whether it would be appropriate, Ki jumped down from the high imprisoning wall that even now had failed to collapse, landing in a crouch and only hissing slightly at the impact her calves took as she landed, burning pain spreading up them. She shook it off and began to walk towards what could only be the epicentre of the blast and the centre of town. She doubted any other travellers would be brave enough to move in darkness. It worked better for her, and maybe she could iron out some of her rustiness in combat on any looter stupid enough to stop her.
The cloaked figure stood in silence on the very spot she knew the battle had taken place, nothing but ash and pavement beneath her feet. Tears fell, unrestrained. She knew this was the perfect way to disappear, to do everything she had promised, but she didn't think it would come up so soon. And how could she leave him so alone? The others hadn't survived and it ripped her heart. Lying to those who had been left behind seemed even more cruel then it had before, when faking her death would have been later in her life. More lies. More secrets. How had her life, of all people, turned into this?
Love. Like her mother, a love that was never returned, but one that would drive her to do whatever she could to earn their favor. That same love had been the reason she had been born.
She stayed the night holding the vigil of the dead.
Akumei woke as if by clockwork for her shift. She sat up and smiled gently at Ian and glanced once at the sleeping Kendra before transforming back into the more tired and simply dressed Keira, patting her ribs gingerly as she stretched and gestured for Ian to sleep. Without waiting, she added to the embers of the fire and sat, watching the horizon and waiting for morning.
James had been in the outer realms. He was having to deal with some political dispute of Calandra's with the council. He was the only one who could iron out a compromise. They had just been about to reach an agreement when the entire palace shook. The only thing that could shift the earth so much because of the palace's enchantments would have to be magick.
"We're under attack." Someone said jumping to conclusions. James armed himself quickly and ran out the door to the battlements to see the problem. He was not prepared to see nothing but fire consuming the meadow above the town and heading in all directions. He could see villagers battling with water spells to protect their homes.
"Get more men down there now and be prepared this is not an ordinary fire. Keep your weapons handy." James ordered the soldiers that had been gathering. As he spoke, a fire youma stepped out of the blaze and with one swipe of his arm cut down the nearest elf. Her scream ripped through the air as she fell. James eyes could see others pull her away from the front lines, but she didn't move again. Racing off the wall, James heard one of the captains call,
"Your highness, where are you going?" James stopped on the stairs.
"Keep up the fight. This was not caused by something natural. Or by something that is even here. There was a colossal release of magical energy that seems to be able to cross planes. Protect the village at all costs."
"But, sir, what are you going to do?"
"Find my daughter." With those words, he was gone. Not bothering with a saddle, James mounted the fastest horse in the stables knowing he had to get by the fire and into the woods. This amount of residual power could only be from one source and that source was in the mortal world. But if it was strong enough to have effects in the outer realms, then what about the faery realms.
Emily allowed another arrow to fly from her bow before dropping back down behind the parapet at lightning speed, gagging slightly on the scent of burning hair as the end of her braid followed her, singed and still smoking. She let off a string of English curses before glancing across at her husband, inspecting him for damage. She gave him half a worried smile before looking down on the basin she'd had someone bring out to her, that she'd been trying to use continuously since this sudden assault began.
"LINK!" She shrieked again, almost desperate for a response. For what felt like the millionth time fear tingled through her skin at the lack of an answer. Consequences she couldn't even begin to explain could spring from this, the potential loss of her oldest and closest friend, and it was almost overwhelming.
Another fireball hit the wall behind her and Emily shook her head, reloading her bow and leaning back over the parapet, face determined.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ki ran a hand over the hairs that had raised on her neck at the sight of the house that she cherished so dearly. It was half demolished, burned, reeking of magic and burning wood.
She tiptoed gently inside, past the door hanging on its hinges, knowing there would be no one there. It was too empty, too quiet, and she sighed softly, looking around for any hint of where they could be.
She searched quickly and thoroughly, finding nothing but destruction and ruin. Finishing in the kitchen, she sighed as she looked around the mess, knowing the battle had long left this place.
She made her way over to the burst water pipe, grabbing a cracked bowl from the floor before filling it from the pipe and sitting on the floor with it in front of her.
"Phoebe?" She called, hearing her voice crack as she knew it would go unanswered. She scrunched her face up to keep tears at bay and tried again. "Link?" Nothing. "Kiara? Ian?"
She exhaled through her nose, leaning her head back and thinking. Who would know where her nieces and nephews come siblings were? Who was left? Frowning, she leant over the water again.
"Tylir."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emily jumped as Ki's voice echoed next to her, almost dropping her bow with expectation before registering what was said and gesturing at Tylir.
"New York calling," she said, forcing a smile to attempt to mask the disappointment at which voice it was.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Keira watched the sun rise in the eerie silence of New York, looking at her sleeping companions with a sense of impending fate. What would happen from here? When would they rebuild te city? Will the army roll in? Would they find anyone? Shaking her head to clear the dark thoughts away, she dug in her bag to find some breakfast.

He would be here soon, she had no doubt. He was her brother after all and Ian was a very resourceful kind of guy. But how would he handle losing his entire immediate family in one blow. There was a slim chance Aunt Ki could be alive, but Link didn't have time to check on her first. There was someone else and their fate would decide hers. Knowing she had taken long enough, Link unclasped the silver locket her father's wife had given her. It apparently had belonged in his family for generations and he had left it for her. It had taken the woman years to give it to her out of the bitterness and spite she held for the woman that held her husband's love and affection, Link's mother.
A year after her Mother's death, Link had received the invitation to visit Aqua in Japan. Taking Emily with her, she had met the other woman in her father's life. It had been a brief visit with an apology and Link being given the locket she now always wore. Anyone who knew her over the past 14 years, would recognize it as her most prized possession.
With a sigh of regret and apologizing to the father she never knew, Link dropped the locket into the ashes and walked away, heading north, the direction of one of the New York City orphanages.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James drew on ice and water magick to strengthen his blade as he cut his way through the youma. Hissing and steam followed the horse's hooves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kendra woke before Ian and with more pain in her joints then she knew to be possible. With here eyes open to the dawn, Kendra could see how truly devastated her city was now covered in rubble and ash. Unbidden, she started to silently cry as she thought of the millions people who lived and worked in Manhattan, all dead or dying. Family, Friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and strangers burned or buried beneath what was left, like she had been. It was all too awful as it sunk in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tylir followed Emily's lead and loosed another arrow into the fray before taking the basin calling his name. He still felt guilty sometime about his friendship with Lady Kiara because of Emily. But he was fiercely loyal ((OOC I'm a hufflepuff)) and wasn't about to cut her out of his life. Emily certainly couldn't object now that they needed information.
"Lady Kiara, it's good to hear from you. Are you alright? Is everyone okay?" There was a small chance that whatever was happening in the Faery realm was an isolated, but Emily and Tylir both agreed that it was highly doubtful. It had been more hours than Tylir could count since the attack began and Emily had been trying to get a hold of anyone. But no one had answered until now.
