Julia put her hand on the metal banister of the stairs that led to the code activated heavy industrial door that would take them to the street unobserved, but immediately withdrew it in disgust. It was coated with rust and something slick. She didn't question it further. Being in her job as long as she had, Julia was quite certain she didn't want to know. The stairs also creaked with age and neglect. Now, she knew it hadn't been like that this morning, even if she had skipped her morning tea. In fact the only reason she didn't turn right back around to find out what was going on is because she knew there would be more answers ahead than behind.
"it's almost as if someone accelerated the age on the tunnel." she mused to herself, despite having company. Talking to herself was a bad habit she had when solving problems. She attributed it to growing up as an only child and needing to talk to someone.

Lex scowled and threw her phone at the floor; it bounced and skidded, barely scratching as it did.
"I do not bloody know but if I don't find out soon I am going to kill something!" She spoke fast, in a higher register than was normal, still scowling at the seemingly dead electronics that surrounded her.

Emily shook her head at the other woman's rant and turned on her heels. "I'll go check the fuses." She shook her head again and moved towards her desk, pulled the bottom drawer open and pulled out a pair of trainers. Jessica always complained that heels were inappropriate for the job, but Emily had protested with the idea that she wouldn't be in the field much. But she kept a pair in emergency.
She shook her heels off, pulled the trainers on and grabbed a torch just in case and moved back out towards the main room. "I'll be back in a few minutes." With that she moved through the catacombs towards the breaker room.

Mike frowned as the furnace failed to light the first time: "It worked fine when I used it last..." he then closed the furnace door as the bug started to burn inside once Jess fixed the problem: "Well at least that's dealt with now..." he brushed his hands together to get rid of the dust from them: "I'd better get back upstairs and see what state my infirmary's in..." he sighed, finding the keys in his pocket as he spoke, turning towards the doorway leading back to the stairs.

Ethan rolled his eyes at Julia's comment. I swear she's not quite all there.
As outlandish and geeky as Julia's comment seemed to Ethan, she did have a point. Ethan wasn't one for noticing when things needed cleaning but he just knew the stairs had never looked this bad. As they began to get closer to the door, he started to wonder what it would look like outside.
"Let's just get that door open, it's gotta look better out there than it does in here" he commented as he peeled his hand off the sticky rail and wiped it on his trousers.

Lex sighed heavily and dug in her bag again, producing a silver rectangle wit the word "Nokia" printed in big letters.
"Old fail safe," she muttered to herself, grabbing her phone from where it had scattered to as she'd thrown it and sliding the back off, replacing the battery and making a squeal of glee as the eight-bit screen lit up.
She entered the date, 01/01/2000, as it always made her when she replaced the battery, then sat and patiently waited for it to catch a signal. And waited. And waited.
Her screen flashed again. There was only a moment of confusion on Lex's face before it changed to anger and her phone was promptly launched across the room again, the words "No SIM card found" still on the screen.
(FYI anyone whose character has a mobile phone, most networks disable SIMs after about a year of no activity, and a nearly all old SIMs were disabled and replaced by operators in the mid 2000s to make way for 3G #researchgo x)

Julia frowned at the dead keypad next to the heavy steel and stone industrial door that would take them to through to the building that was the cover for their entrance. She tried several times to get the keypad to work, but it just wouldn't turn on.
"Looks like we'll have to push it open." she said to Ethan clearly quite less than enthused.

"Go on then let me in front" Ethan sighed; it wasn't the easiest door to manually open at the best of times.
Ethan gestured to Julia to push the part of the door next to him as he leaned against it. He pushed as hard as he could and let out a groan. "My God, I'll dislocate my shoulder before this opens".
He took a step back and stretched out his arms. "If it doesn't open this time then it ain't openin'." He announced, before powering against the door. "Gahhhh!" he groaned, feeling the arteries pulse in his head, "AAH!" The door cracked open slightly. Ethan put his hands on his knees and breathed heavily.
"Does that count?" He looked hopefully at Julia.

"As a start." Julia sighed, wondering how they could possibly get the door to budge anymore. "Come on, let's go back. Maybe there's something we can use in vaults. Or perhaps someone can get the power back on." she suggested and headed back the way they had come.

Ethan wiped his brow and followed Julia back down the stairs. He tried to think of anything strange happening in the past few days but he couldn't think of anything to explain this; nothing strange had happened. Well, nothing stranger than normal.

Emily pulled a face at the dust and cobwebs that covered the floor, walls and ceiling. "The hell?" It hadn't even been an hour since she was down here, checking old files on an alien. There hadn't even been one cobweb in sight and now?
She shook her head with confusion before she traipsed the rest of the corridor until a door labelled "BREAKER ROOM" jumped at her. She pushed the door open, swung the torch inside and stopped on the boundary. Dust was stacked in layers, thick and comfortable on all the surfaces.
The fuse box was on the far wall and she meandered through the dark room. She flicked the box open and checked the fuses. A few of them had gone. She flicked them all back up and angled her head to the ceiling, expecting light.
The dark pressed against her and she frowned, head turning back to the box. Up and down she flicked the fuses a few times until she left them up and closed the box with a frown. "What is going on?"

Collecting herself and sighing, Lex crawled across the room to her phone and unlocked it, seeing if she had any options. Shaking her head, she hit the emergency button and placed the phone to her ear, waiting for it to ring through.
"State your rank and badge number," the rather bored voice on the other end spoke. Lex fumed through her nostrils. She couldn't bear talking to people on the phone, particularly if she had to be official. She was much better behind a screen.
"Alexandra Quinn, Torchwood. 4-dash-4."
There was a pause on the other end of the line, followed by a crackle and a cough.
"Those credentials don't exist in our system, ma'am. Are you sure you have the right number?"
Lex's face creased in confusion with a tinge of worry. Her mouth hung agape and she quickly swallowed and regained her composure.
"Very sure. Do you have a supervisor I can speak to?"
"I can't patch you through to the supervisor without some credentials, ma'am. Real ones."
Lex growled, covering the mouthpiece of her phone before bellowing into the compound,
"JESS!"

Ethan heard Lex shouting as he reached the bottom of the stairs. As he entered back through the door he pretended to clean his ears out; "Woman, is that volume seriously necessary?"

((Sorry for the delay, I was a little confused as to what was happening))
Jessica heard Lex's shout from the bottom of the stairs and sped up her pace, walking back into the Central Hub. "Lex, What's wrong!?" she asked as she stumbled just a little into the room. "Ethan? Julia? Back already?" she muttered getting a little distracted seeing them walking in to the hub at the other end. She shook her head and turned back to Lex, "What's wrong?"

"That door will not open." Ethan stated, pointing behind him, "It's almost as if it's rusted shut..." he was mostly speaking to himself now as he started looking around. He had suddenly remembered a strange-looking device they'd acquired that they thought would be a really interesting piece of alien technology that had turned out to effectively be an electrical car jack.
