I suppose it's ironic, really. I don't think we ever thought such a fantastic thing could happen. When I say fantastic, I don't mean good. I mean almost fantasy like. Insane. And the only ones that ever deemed it possible were the first to go. They were definitely the first to go.
Me, I suppose I was lucky. My mother was one of the first to go down, and when she realised it, she left. Left me and my sister and my Dad, and ran far away. I suppose she tried to get the message out, tried to seek help. I guess she went to my Godfather for help, but nothing could really save her.
My Godfather, he wasn't as lucky as me. He's in the hospital now, fighting for his life. Has been for months now. Drawing on a year. Stupid place, he's no good to them there. They say he talks rubbish, but they're wrong. I know he's the only one still alive that knows how it started. The pandemic.
'Cause Richard, my Godfather, he taught my mother all she knew, and he taught me too. About the way it works. The way it can infest your system from a seemingly harmless point, and can kill you within days, like it did my Mom. Cut you off. Like it did him. And me? I'm stranded.
See, my little sister, she doesn't believe me about what happened. She still don't believe me. Sometimes, I wish she would. She's only a kid but I don't think she wants to accept that Mom is gone. Poor kid. I'm glad I still have her, though.
You see, things like that, they ain't right. And when computer viruses, they start killin' people? It seems a little far-fetched. And I understand why Rose don't believe me. But she should, 'cause Mom and Richard are right. Just you wait and see.
James looked up, over his cereal, at the TV. "Hey Dad, turn it up?" he said, brushing his thick chestnut hair out of his eyes. The figure slumped in the armchair several metres closer to the TV made no movement. James sighed.
"Hey, Dad! DAD!" He said, loudly. A soft "Mmmrumf" sound echoed from the sofa, showing the awakening of the drunken man on the sofa. "Turn it up, will ya?"
The man slouched in the chair grumbled as he hit the remote, and the volume rose so the crackly sound of the New Calafornia news echoed to reach James's ears.
"In the last six hours, the pandemic has spread to completely cover Japan and it's surrounding countries. Scientists still cannot explain why such ill-prepared countries as New India and Africa still have not been touched by this ever growing, and ever killing, disease. The current death toll for the mystery disease is 22,000, and according to our sources, is on the rise steeply, and shows no sign of showing down.".
James sighed at the woman's voice on the telly. Of course not, you stupid woman, he found himself thinking, If you'd listen to Uncle Richard, you'd know why. Finding himself suddenly off his food, he pushed the cereal away, and grabbed his bag. "You ready, Ro? Time for school!" he shouted at the staircase.
(Feel free to play Rose, anyone. She's approximately 12.)

James' voiced echoed up the stairs loudly and made her jump a little. She hurriedly pushed the faded red leather bound book under her pillow and grabbed her little black fluffy bag as she ran to the stairs. She paused at the bathroom and looked at the mirror, a pale faced, black haired little girl stared back with deep midnight blue/black eyes that shone with tears.
She wiped her face and trotted down the stairs silently, pulling her black, blue striped skirt down a little to at least cover her knees. She scowled at James for a second, then smiled sweetly "ready"
acts like he's mom again, but mom's coming home she thought to herself

"Come on, then," James said, not unkindly, heading for the back door.
"Back later, Dad!" he called through to the living room, recieving a groan in response; so nothing out of the ordinary, and then he opened the back door and stepped through.
His chestnut hair swayed in the breeze a little, crashinginto his ocean coloured eyes and making him blink rapidly. He had a long frame with very little flesh on it, and wore a holey jumper and grey trousers, with a battered rucksack slung over one shoulder. He turned and grinned at Rose, walking backwards.
"What do you fancy for breakfast then Ro? Chocolate, or something proper?"

Rose stared blankly, her little feet marching along of their own accord. She blinked and looked at James, as if seeing him for the first time.
He's asking what i want ... mom always knows what i want
Her stomach growled under her blue/black striped sweater as she smiled and shook her head, whispering "not hungry..."
She played with her black hair, brushing it over one side of her face, 12 she may be, but since mom went away she became more emo everyday

"Oh, don't be silly," said James, shaking his head and narrowly avoiding walking into the bus stop, as he did every day, still walking backwards. He shook his head again, brown hair brushing his eyelids, "You must want something."
He paused for a moment, and then looked to Rose.
"Do you fancy coming and seeing Uncle Rick later, Rosie?"

She carried on staring into space, marching past the bus stop without effort, unlike James, but that was because he always walked backwards when talking to her.
She shrugged as cutely as she could, her face not quite giving the cheerfulness that normally accompanies the gesture "mmm, sure."
So long as uncle rick and James don't tell silly stories again she thought quietly as she trundled along

James cocked a frown at Rose, but said nothing.
"Come on. Food. Uncle Rick will shout at me if I haven't fed you," he said with a smile, glancing towards the corner shop they always used - based on the lack of technology presented in their shop, still using a 1950's till.

She looked up in time to see the little corner shop and her one visible eye shone brightly as her thin lips split into a wide grin. Rose loved this corner shop because they made her favourite, chocolate toasties.
She looked up at James and pointed at the little shop with a big goofy grin across her face "Hungry now" she half whispered half squeaked with excitement.

James grinned.
"I thought you might be," he said, as casually as possible, opening the door to the shop with the tiny tinkle of the bell above the doorframe.

Rose half skipped, half sauntered into the little shop, marching straight up to the glass counter with a big beaming smile on her face "Two chocolate toasties please!" she squeaked. Though she couldn't see over the counter she knew the little old lady and her tall husband should be there like they always were.

James smiled gently, leaning over his sister's head and smiling at the weary looking old woman behind the counter. She nodded, though she seemed distracted, and busied herself around, making Rose's toasties.
James frowned. It was odd not to see Edward, the male half of the couple who owned the shop, stood with his wife at this time in the morning. He tried to shrug it off, he could just be tired, or under the weather.
The thought made James's breath suddenly catch in his throat, and he glanced rapidly from Rose to the old lady. Trying to steady his heartbeat, he gently moved so he was stood behind Rose and placed a hand on her shoulder in a base protective nature as Mrs Pretchitt handed over Rose's toasties. James placed the money in her hands and they left, noticably faster than they normally would - James hoped that Rose would notice it less now that she had toasties to distract her.
