Don was carrying a bag with his left hand – inside were clothes and accessories, as well as some toiletries and the like. It was basic stuff, mostly things he had bought today, and hopefully it would suffice on the journey he was about to go on. He thought over it again – he was finally going in a ship again, finally travelling through the black to wherever. He was doing what he enjoyed with some seemingly friendly folk. That made him smile.
Mei open the door and welcomed the engineer in. He still looked sleep-deprived, but he was on good form. They had a small chat on the way to the mess hall, and he kept repeating how grateful and happy he was. That boosted Mei’s mood a little. This engineer might bring new life to the crew, and might aid the grieving process. He still had no idea what had happened.
The pair walked into the mess hall. Mei scooted over to her soup whilst Don placed his bag on the floor.
“Morning all,” he began, before turning to Sam “I done my business Cap, nothing for me planetside anymore.”

"Jingcai. Now then, we're getting off this rock and further away from Reaver space. Still staying on the Rim though, I'm hopin' we'll find some simple business on Burnet, Meridian's moon. If not we'll travel to the borders. Get us in the air Mei. The same goes for the rest of you, get to work. Don, follow me." Sam was already walking out of the mess hall when he was finishing his last sentence.
((Jingcai = brilliant))

Riley had stayed quiet whilst everyone was busy getting ready. He mostly wanted to stay out of the way.
"Is there anywhere I can go to watch out whilst we take off? Never been off planet before and I'd like to see the view if it's possible."

Don picked up his bag once more, following after Sam without saying a word to the man. He didn’t even know if his bag was required, but he’d look a fool if he had to make two trips. He kept a few steps behind the captain.
“You wanna see the view?” Mei chimed to Riley “Come with me once I finished eating, nothing better than a pilot’s eye view when going into the black.”
After that she kept on slurping on the remainder of her soup. The Captain asked them to get to work now, but she didn’t want to fly on an empty stomach. Getting off the planet, plus avoiding reaver space, meant she was going to be busy for a fair chunk of the next few hours. A rumbling tummy wasn’t good company for that.

"Really?" He once again wore that idiotic smile.
"That would be amazing."

Sam walked right up to Parker's room before turning to face Don. He gestured his arm out with a smile and pointed at the hatch door.
"Your room. Look after it."

She finished her soup and rinsed the bowl of the remaining product. It would be the last thing she’d eat for a while, unless people brought her stuff whilst she was piloting. She didn’t usually like interruptions during her work, and she was letting Riley come see the view in the hopes that he’d scatter after a few minutes of awe. Space was cool, but the black was monotonous after a while.
She beckoned him to follow her as she made her way to leave the mess hall. Getting off the planet would be good; it was one step towards getting over the loss of Parker. She didn’t expect happiness the moment they left the atmosphere, but it was babysteps in a long walk.
Don sleepily nodded to Sam, mouthing the word “thanks” before pushing the hatch so he could descend into his new room. Clumsily he made his way down the ladders, because there was no gracious way down a set of ladders when one was missing a hand. There was a drawer, which he threw his bag on to start putting his clothes away. The bed looked comfy enough, and the bedside table big enough for odds and ends. It wasn’t home yet. It felt too new, like a hotel room he was only going to spend the night in. It would take him a few sleeps in this room to turn it into home.
He thought against unpacking his clothes, and instead his primary instinct to get more sleep kicked in. He pounced on the bed, landing on it with a thud. The thing was comfy enough, like sinking into a toasty marshmallow. He rolled to get comfortable, only for some odd item to drop out of his pocket and make its way onto the floor.
“Wáng bā,” he swore in a very tired manner, feeling on the floor for whatever item it was. It must have been something he placed there during his engine repair, but his sleepy state could not recall. His confusion only intensified when he found not the item he was looking for, but instead pulled out a photo frame from behind the bedside table.

Wáng bā = “son of a bitch”

Riley followed the pilot. He couldn't believe how nice everyone was. For some reason he had expected them to act more like pirates than anything else. He just hoped they didn't have a plank for him to walk on.

Fayth watched the drift of people leaving the mess. She watched Riley in particular, feeling a sort of pang twist at her guts. The guy was child like in his nature, curious, awestruck by the simple matters the rest of the crew took for granted, such as travelling in space.
For near twenty years Fayth had been a guest to the dark abyss that would soon surround them. Always travelling, unable to settle anywhere, until she had found Fúpái. Near twenty years she'd been trying to wipe away two haunting looks that never were far behind her. And now they were dragging themselves back up, planting themselves inside of her mind as she tried to focus on her simple task of cleaning her guns. And Riley was the reason for them being brought up. He reminded her too much of her youngest brother.
Connor. He was a little thing, hadn't yet grown into the same figure as his Dad, and for his lack of height he was a victim at school for the bullies. Fayth, the oldest of three, was tasked with following him to school and waiting for him by the school gates until he ambled up next to her. Add into that she'd tried her damnedest to keep the bullies off of his back. Only one day she didn't wait. Her and her friends had recently discovered an old factory that had been abandoned. A place for every teenager's desire to climb, drink and do anything they'd want without questioning eyes and telling mouths back to their parents.
Taking one night off of her duties had been the biggest mistake of her life. She closed her eyes and let out one long breath to push those thoughts away. She opened her eyes again, grabbed her gun, cloth with cleaning solution and rubbed a little harder than necessary to keep those thoughts at bay.

“Keep up Riley” Mei called back. They entered the cockpit, which was tidy enough now. There was a stray mug and scattered stationery, but the control panel was clear and accessible. Mei needed to be able to have full access to the multiple dials and switches, just in case of any situation. As she fired the ship up, she could tell Don had fixed up the engine good and proper. The dashboard came to life, the control panel flickered with lights, and a slight bleeping noise signalled that take-off could be performed.
She sat down in her chair and began doing one final control panel check to make sure everything was ready for their departure. The last thing they wanted was for a false started. Behind her chair there would be enough space for Riley to stand and watch.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Fúpái… ” muttered Don to nobody in particular. He recognised the Firefly immediately, a time when it was in very good condition. Don pulled himself up to sit on the bed whilst he examined the photograph. It took him a few seconds to twig that one of the men was the Captain; he looked different here, more joyous and younger. For the other man, no answers came to mind. It wasn’t Siegfried who was the only man who was part of the crew. It couldn’t be Riley or Rufus, for they were just as new as Don was to this ship. This man was an enigma.
Don thought that this room might have belonged to the man in the picture. Someone who was close to the Captain? The room was cleared apart from this one item. Why would either the man in the picture or the Captain deliberately leave an item?
Tiredness overrode curiousity. He had it in his mind that asking Sam or any other crewmember about the photograph might yield answers. Maybe someone wanted to keep this picture for themselves, because it had no meaning to Don. Above all this though, the engineer wanted to recover after spending the night doing repairs. He placed his head on the pillow and began to loudly snore as he fell asleep.

The Captain then headed to the cargo bay to check that everything was in order and look over the goods they had stashed; he needed to know exactly what they currently had for trading.

Riley had to jog slightly to keep up with Mei but he was astounded by the cockpit. He'd never been in one before so to see all the blinking lights and the flight controls was another fantastic sight. He took his place behind the pilot seat and looked around.
"Should I hold onto something?" He asked with a slightly concerned face. He had no idea what the ship would be like on take-off.

"It's not unusual for a little bit of turbulence, especially considering she's just been repaired. Just get a hand on the wall and prop yourself."
She was satisfied that the ship was in flying condition, and their take-off should be smooth. In seconds, the ship was air-bourne. It hovered above the ground. Mei smiled to herself, glad to be flying once more. She twisted the appropriate levers, and the ascension out of the atmosphere began. The blue skies faded to black space, and they were on their way at last.
