Neil caught the bag instinctively and looked at it confused for a second. Then he looked at Tara and he realised what was about to happen. He threw the bag behind him but he wasn't quite quick enough. His dim-wittedness had failed him again. The bag exploded before it reached the end of the ledge and it threw Neil forward. He landed on top of Tara with a crash. His feet were no longer on the end of his legs, or anywhere for that matter. His shin bones protruded out from his flesh and the floor was painted red with his blood. He screamed in pain, it was nothing he had ever felt before. It took him a minute to realise he was on top of Tara. Still screaming, and unable to move his massive weight from on top of her even if he wanted to, he placed his hands around her throat and squeezed.
He couldn't stop screaming, it was hard to tell how much of the flesh of the back side of his body remained but there wasn't much of it. Even the back of his head looked like melted candle wax. He let go of her throat, and just like biting on a pencil to ease the pain, he locked his teeth around her wind pipe and bit down.
As the blood trickled down his chin and his mouth filled with flesh and blood, he knew it was over.

Tara was too thrown in shock to move when Neil crashed on top of her. Her ears were ringing and her head was spinning. That wasn't her best of ideas. Then she heard something that sounded like screaming and she choked back a surprised gasp when a pair of hands grabbed at her throat. But her arms weren't responding to her brains prompts to move and push those hands off of her.
The seconds of throat crushing seemed to drag and her world began to dot itself with black spots before she took a sharp, painful inhale of air. But it was short lived before something tore through her throat. Blood filled her windpipe and her hands finally scrambled across the bloody gaping hole in her throat. Pain erupted through her body as she choked and gargled on her own blood, feeling the liquid creep up her throat and into her mouth, down the sides of her face and onto the floor.
This was how it ended and she died, gasping and choking on nothing but her own blood.

The cannon boomed. Neil blacked out. When he woke up he was in a hospital in the Capitol. His left leg really hurt, but when he moved the covers to see it it wasn't there. Neither was his other leg. He had bandages where his knee should be but nothing below them. His back roared with pain. The skin grafts were still settling. Someone came and told him to try and stay still. They explained to him the surgeries he'd had but he didn't really listen. He was just happy. He was a champion, and that's all that mattered.
