Charlotte fiddled with the glass between her hands before letting her shoulders sag with a deep sigh. "Well," she started only for her mouth to run dry. She sipped her wine and started again. "Martin's first and foremost love trumped that of his family."
That was all she managed before shutting her mouth again and going back to sipping her wine in silence.

(I hope you know he was called Martin a few posts ago ) Tom sighed and looked down. This didn't look easy for Charlotte. He had no idea why he'd imagined it might be. He tried to envision Charlotte's husband the few times he'd met him; the wedding, their first child's christening. To remember if anything stuck out, but all of his memories focused on Charlotte. Though he was desperate for detailed answers, Tom merely nodded. "Where is he now?" he asked, muted.

She swallowed a mouthful of wine. This time, it didn't go down as well as she thought it might and it caught in her throat just a little. After clearing her throat she said, "Back home."
There was nothing more to be said about it.

Tom nodded, and then smiled, determined to make the air more cheerful.
"Well, you're safe up here anyway. And you can stay as long as you like. We have a huge house and none of it gets used; it'd be nice to have some noise around here for once." As he spoke, Tom's voice became almost wistful.

Charlotte let out a laugh. "You'll regret saying that when the boys begin to make noise. Trust me." She finished off her wine and sat the glass down on the nearest flat surface. "And thank you for the offer Tom. Really. I appreciate it."

Tom shook his head.
"Think nothing of it. What is an abode between two friends?" he spoke with a smirk, shaking his head lightly as he continued to sip at his whiskey.
"There's more wine in the cupboard.." he spoke gently, gesturing at the drinks cabinet.

The smile on her face never faded and she grabbed her glass and moved to the cupboard. "You'll regret saying that," she joked. "Wine is one thing I cannot go without."
